We have used CLR for several years and have had no reaction on or hands or rags we have used to get rid of surplus or build up of lime deposit in our sinks, bath, and shower. We have had it on our hands but washed them as soon as we were through cleaning. We are still using it.

I think you can use it on rusty tools. I would think you need to soak the tools in it. I guess it depends on how bad the rust is. I think it's worth trying.
