The pickup is not responding on a bose pa or fender amp. Is there somehow a battery in there? Or is a preamp required?

Apparently you have to put electric guitar strings on it for the pickup to respond;) switch the strings out.

Can you only play this sitar with an amplifier? And if not, does it sound loud?
