what does refurbished mean, bad motor that was fixed?

Right now if you buy directly from vitamix they are $189.00 for refurbished with free shipping 3year warranty also. My friend has had her vitamix for 20 years and she makes smoothies every day and Loves hers. Never a problem.

What is the warranty on this mixer?

Amazon provides a 90 day warranty, but I contacted Vitmax direcly by email for the 3 year warranty. They will assist you in setting up your 3 year warranty for this product. You can also go to their website, create a Vitamix Rewards account, register your product, and set up your warranty that way as well. This way requires uploading your receipt (screenshot or photo). Your Vitamix Rewards History will show your Amazon purchase date and all of the other activities you have completed with points for each activity.

Does the packaging say refurb or make it obvious? Considering as a gift but wouldn't do if it said refurb or came in brown box etc.

It comes in a brown box but has vitamix logo on it. Booklet says reconditioned. Everything is packaged professionally though.
