I am using these in the corrosive environment of sea air. I use them primarily for protection of my lenses when I do not want to take the chance of trashing expensive filters or lenses. There may be a little less light transmission with the UV, but in the (most often) very bright lighting of the seaside this is not an issue. The other two are for the purpose of modifying light hitting the lens anyway, required by the bright harsh light of the ocean. Image sharpness is not effected unless you are looking closely at magnified images. No, they are not the best, but the price for what you get is good. Ocean air can etch glass, a dry salt crystal can cause cleaning scratches. Let that happen to these and NOT your lens. With some precautions I still hope that these will survive for a reasonable length of time. No complaints with the quality of their construction. These have a place and a job in my camera bag. I am using them on an Olympus TG4 while on dry land. They do require the use of an adapter with this camera. Beaches are great places to take pictures, just take care of your glass.

This Vivitar Series 1 Multi-Coated HD Pro Filter Set contains a useful variety of multi-coated glass filters for users who need a 40.5mm filter size to fit their lens or camera. But there are a few differences between these and others found here, and it has to do with functionality. Like this one, many similar sets contain UV filters, which not only absorb ultraviolet rays, which can makes outdoor photographs hazy and indistinct, along with serving as a protector for the front of the lens. Many also come with a circular polarizer (CPL), which is an excellent way to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass, and such. These will also enable colors to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. But some of the other sets found here come with a fluorescent filter (FLD), which is said to eliminate the annoying greenish tint which fluorescent lights add to photos. That's true, except if you check your manual, most contemporary digital cameras already come with a white balance control that will do the same. This Vivitar Series 1 filter set instead comes with a neutral density (ND8) filter. This neutral density filter will help reduce the amount of light entering the lens, but will have no affect on color balance. An ND8 has a filter factor of 3-stops, so you are able to slow down the shutter speed or increase the aperture by 3-stops. Using this, one can enable slower shutter speeds so as to emphasize movement, such as waterfalls, clouds, the sea, moving automobiles, etc. For advanced users, it will enable wider apertures to be used so as to decrease the depth of field, which is very desirable in portraiture or macro work. It's a key filter for achieving good "bokeh," which defines the quality of the blurred lights presented in a photo. This doesn't mean a badly taken photo that's all out of focus, but rather the aesthetically pleasing background blur. Likes: + Multicoated filters; cuts down on internal reflections + Japanese glass; higher quality, less distortion than many others + Filter wallet included; protects filters when not in use + 360° rotation on circular polarizer This is a partial list of some of the lenses and cameras with which this 40.5mm filter set will work: ◆ Nikon COOLPIX P7700 Digital Camera ◆ Nikon 1 NIKKOR 10mm f/2.8 lens ◆ Nikon 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 lens ◆ Nikon 1 NIKKOR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 VR zoom lens ◆ Leitz Minolta CL 40mm f/2.0 & 90mm f/4 lenses** ◆ Olympus 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 M. Zuiko Digital ED zoom lens** ◆ Certain lenses in the Pentax Q series** ** Note: The Nikon models in the list above are all accurate as of the date of this review. This is a partial list as there are others. Be sure to check with your individual camera manufacturer to see if 40.5mm is the proper filter size for your individual camera. The specs can usually be found in your instruction manual or on the camera manufacturer's site. Some cameras do list the filter size on the inside of the lens cap. This is an excellent filter set for general, everyday use. If you want a precision filter set, you can find it with the Hoya 40.5mm Digital Filter Kit with 3 Filters & Pouch , and like this set, the one from Hoya also includes the circular polarizer. Summary: The Vivitar Series 1 Multi-Coated HD Pro Filter Set offers one of the most useful sets of filters available in the 40.5mm filter size. In terms of functionality and price it's a bargain, and is highly recommended. Just check your camera specs to make sure that you're getting the correct size before ordering them. 10/10/2012
