Does it have a volume knob?

No it doesn’t since you have to connect it to an amplifier or a VOX AC30 the volume control is there I bought a VoxAc30 and it woks very good connected to a speaker

What is the wood on this guitar?

It says Mahogany but I get the impression that's the color not the wood so I'm not sure.

Do the strings tend to break at the aluminum block is? Just curious if nylon is strong enough to support the tension and friction against the aluminum

I have not had a problem with any strings breaking.
