Is the lid removable and can put sand or water to fill up the individual pieces easily, so little ones can learn about volumn etc? Thanks in advance

It is not built that way but each shape has one side that easily comes off. The shapes do not have any measurements Yes you can fill it with sand or water but not sure if kids can learn volume or measurements using these
