My old lady woke up one morning in an absolute panic. It was cold. The furnace was off, no lights, no nothing. While she began running around in circles muttering incomprehensible gibberish, I took a sleepy eyed walk down to the basement. I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I called a repair guy. Repair guy gave me a time estimate between late afternoon and eternity. Fantastic. I logged into work, marked myself as work from home so I could be there if he ever decided to show up. Old lady was basically fetal at this point, but I got her out of the house and off to work. I eventually remembered we had two emergency power switches for our furnace. One on the furnace itself and one up the stairs. Sure enough the one on the stairs was off. I flipped the switch, waited a few minutes for some warmth and cancelled the repair guy. Old lady had apparently turned it off instead of the lights the night before. This switch cover was mandatory after that morning. It installs in 5 minutes, including time to grab a screwdriver. It'll work on the big rectangular decora switches, you have to snap out a couple plastic pieces first through. Works with the older, smaller blade style ones (what I have) without problems too right out of the box. Once installed it puts a quick flip up door over the switch. The door snaps shut. There's a spot for a lock, but I have no idea who that would actually keep out other than a toddler or something. I wouldn't call this a security device at all. No more accidentally turning the furnace off. Keeps old lady happy (and warm). No more crazy mornings because of a switch.

As expected, this works like it should. We use it on our furnace power switch. We have an old furnace and the power switch is on the side of the furnace. Unfortunately, it is in the path of where we walk when going to our washing machine. So, we have a bad habit of rubbing it accidentally and turning the furnace off. This means, until we notice, we either don't have heat during the wintertime or a/c during the summer. I bought this, put it over the switch, and we no longer worry about that problem. The cover can work with both regular light switches and with decora style switches. Very easy to install - just unscrew the existing faceplate screws of your switch, place this over the faceplate and align it over the screw holes and replace the screws. If it turns out the screws you originally had are too short, this cover conveniently comes with two long screws you can use instead. Brilliant! The only wish I had is that this comes in other colors other than red so that if you wish to use it in the house (such as in a baby's room) it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb and can match your wall color/decor.

Well, this is not an industrial grade product but does the trick for household use. I have a two gang rocker switch in the garage. One switch controls the inside garage lights, the other a outside infrared security light that comes on at night. The security light circuit needs to be 'on' all the time and this lockout meets the need to prevent accidental shut off. The unit is not real sturdy so you need to be gentle when handling. I took a small thin blade screwdriver to open the unit and put a couple drops of oil on the hinge and worked it back and forth so it would open/close easier. The garage switch is a rocker switch - not the toggle type. The two screws that come with it are mounted in removable pieces that need to be removed when using this in a rocker switch application. Use a thin blade screwdriver to remove the two inserts that have the screws attached. The two screws repalce the switch faceplate screws that need to come off the faceplate when mounting this unit. If you are careful enough, this should work well for you.

When I converted my 3rd car garage into a workshop, I wanted to prevent accidental opening of the ovehead door. This serves that purpose perfectly.

I have a son who thinks going to bed isn't as glorious as I think it is. We had already solved the problem of 100 visits back to bed with the door monkey (check it out, it's awesome), but the light was becoming the toddler parent frustration of the month. This little gadget worked perfectly. I have rocker switches with white decorative covers, so no screws were showing. All I had to do was snap out the decor cover to reveal the screws, take those out, and and the switch cover screwed in easily with the provided longer screws. Sure, the product is hideously bright red but in the world of parenting a spirited toddler, it is nothing. The cover snaps shut and he is isn't quite strong or dexterous enough to get it open, so no lock has been needed (and trust me this smart 2.5 year old had tried). It is an inexpensive and effective way to childproof a light switch. Highly recommend.

It performs our intended function of covering a switch. It is flimsy such that this has no industrial purpose, the notion of putting a lock on this is ridiculous: It is merely held on (loosely) by the two small screws that hold on the faceplate. Literally, a child could probably rip this thing off the wall. So make no mistake, this thing is not something to be used in a commercial or industrial setting where it might be subject to vandalism or determined attack. But in a residential environment it's fine for covering up a switch where you simply want a reminder of what's meant to normally be left on (such as dishwasher power) or normally be left off (such as a hallway switch that controls the attic light above). But if used in a residential setting, why make it so "faux industrial"?. I was happy with myself for installing this until my girlfriend came home from work, took one look at it, and said "that thing is hideous". I'm probably being gracious when I give it three stars but it did serve our intended function of simply covering a switch and there was no better alternative that we could find.

Using on a standard, single toggle switch. Installed easily - right on the wall plate, using the same screws that were in the plate. Got a little padlock from discount store. Serves the purpose of keeping my grandmother from turning on the switch that controls the electric stove in her kitchenette. I have a key, and we keep one hidden and out of reach, so only her home-attendant and I use the stove. The cover door closes so tightly that we could probably get away with no padlock, because if she ever tried it, she would think it was locked in some way she doesn't understand and leave it alone. Best not to gamble. Actually, this was the best solution for our problem. Her stove power had been shut off completely, for the safety of herself and neighbors. At least now caretakers can cook and reheat food in her home (apartment). This could be used without a padlock, just as a reminder not to touch that switch, or to prevent the reflex flipping of vulnerable switches. (Mine came with the english/spanish sticker already applied, and no extra stickers. That's fine for us, but not as described.)

I purchased this item to deter my husband (who has Alzheimer's) from switching off our furnace accidently. He wasn't able to distinguish this switch from a light switch. It was easy to install on my own and he hasn't bothered it since. :) I would recommend this product for anyone that needs to keep specific switches under lock and key, out of curious reach for safety reason.

It was cheap and lived up to suspicions. It arrived poorly packed and broken but for the price not worth bothering with a return. Lesson learnt, quality pays for itself...
