If you want to learn about Field Archaeology, this NOT the book!
Chris tells his personal story about getting started in Field Archaeology, but never expresses what actually happens on the site.If you want to know how to . . . logically determine the probable location of remains . . . carefully dig down to where bones begin . . . sweep away soil without disturbing the remains . . . remove the remains with the least harmful effects . . . shake a sifter box for best results . . . This is NOT the book to buy!!!!If you already have your degree and you want learn how to camp, how to cook, write a resume, file for unemployment and pick roomates . . . then go ahead and buy it!

Really Informative--Good for all level of beginners
Even though I'm an archaeology PhD student, I have only recently been able to gain experience in the CRM sector. This book is great for those students who are either just starting out with a BA looking to do archaeology "shovelbum" work as well as those students, like myself, who have been focused on academic projects in other areas of the world and are looking for a nice, easy introduction to the CRM world. The book covers everything from what kind of gear to bring into the field to the basic structure of CRM survey and excavation. Some chapters cover basics for excavation beginners like what to bring camping and how to go about finding a place to stay, while other chapters provide good summaries of the structure of CRM as well as some background on basic skills needed in the field. In short, depending on your level of excavation expertise, you may not need all the chapters, but it's still a great resource for understanding field life and has enough ideas that you may find yourself trying something new. The book is a straightforward, quick read and a practical guide for the field.

Great advice for the career field technician! A colleague of mine liked the book so much, she is using it as supplemental material for a class she is teaching at UCSC.
