What is the best battery do I order with this?

Without power from the battery, does this work as a regular ratchet? I could see situations where I would want to torque bolts manually.

Yes, this can be used without a battery using your own strength. It's reliable and the battery last forever. It's not a power house at 35 foot pounds of torque, but I break nuts and bolts lose manually and then use the ratchet's battery power. I use it daily in my automotive shop.

Can this be used as a typical ratchet once battery has torqued as much as it can on it's own?

According to Milwaukee, yes, you can apply up to 50 ft-lbs of force while using it as a ratchet without risking any damage to the tool.

I bought one--the ratcheting mechanism is tight; it does not want to ratchet. Also, direction switch is hard to use. Does it loosen up with use?

the switch on the last 3 I've do the same thing. very hard need plyers to switch directions
