Hi Brenda, My husband suffers from GERD. He had been prescribed all kinds of meds, in all kinds of combinations, and nothing was working. We finally went into Boston, to a major teaching hospital where we met with a gastroenterologist who teaches medicine at Harvard Medical School. After reviewing my husband's records, he came in with final recommendations of 3 prescriptions and Extra Strength Gaviscon. He told us that of all the meds that are similar, including Maalox, Gaviscon works the best. From what he said, Gaviscon contains an algae component. Think about algae floating on top of the water. That's kind of what the Gaviscon does, creating a barrier so the acid can't get up into the throat. I hope this has been of some help. Feel better!

Yes, and not the extra dose of alginate you might be looking for that I hear is available in Europe. Consider purchasing separate alginate powder to supplement it or as an alternative.

The chewable tablets seem much less expensive. Do they work as well?

The liquid will work in 15 seconds after taking it, and the tablets need 2-3 minutes. If the pain is not constant I would recommend pills. Gaviscon is the best I've taken.
