Yes, base test it, with the more expensive one you can test more points at the same time.

Does this work with rj11 and cat5?

Yes it does. As well as coax cables.

Do the remote identifiers also function as testers

Hi, Yes, it does test the line indicating a PASS or FAULT on the screen. If the cable fails then it will also show which pairs have failed. I have used it to install lines across floors and rooms altogether and I was very satisfied with it. However, I would suggest having a look at youtube; there are plenty of videos showing the full range of features that the tester covers. Hope this helps.
