Matrix is a great product - despite confusion about packaging and contents.
Seachem Matrix is a great natural medium for colonizing both nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria so important for good water chemistry and the health of one's aquarium inhabitants.I noticed many users have complained about receiving an adulterated product, and frankly I thought I had received one as well. I called Seachem and got the scoop. Here's what I found out:Matrix is a natural, mined product. The mineral has natural variations in size and color. When mined, black Obsidian is sometimes included in the take. The Obsidian is removed by hand before packaging, but some slips into the container from time to time. The packaging does not have a tamper-proof seal beneath the lid. When you open the jar, you immediately see the product.Matrix is sold by volume and not by weight. A minimum weight is listed in the literature (e.g.: 1 liter of Matrix = 400 gram net weight) but this is required by law, and has nothing to do with the actual weight of the product, which can vary greatly due to Matrix absorbing moisture from the air, for example. The 1 liter of Matrix I received weighted 967 grams out of the jar. When you receive Matrix, expect it to vary in color, size, and that there may be a few dark or black rocks in the jar.Now for the actual use. Matrix provides a tremendous amount of surface area. The outer surfaces and crevices provide a very hospitable environment for the aerobic (oxygen consuming) nitrifying bacteria that make up the 'bio filter' so critical to breaking down Ammonia to Nitrite, and Nitrite to Nitrate. It's benefit doesn't stop there. At the end of the aerobic portion of the Nitrogen Cycle, nitrate is left to build up in the water column, and is one of the major pollutants that dictate the frequency and quantity of water changes. Nitrate can be reduced to Nitrogen gas - but this is an anaerobic (oxygen deprived) process requiring another type of bacteria. Nitrate laden water seeps into the core of Matrix after having been stripped of oxygen by the aerobic bacteria on the medium's surface. This oxygen-poor environment is perfect for colonizing anaerobic bacteria that consume Nitrate and release inert Nitrogen gas. This final step in the Nitrogen Cycle helps control the buildup of Nitrate in the aquarium, contributing markedly to the long term health of it's inhabitants.

This is heads and shoulders above any other bio media
There simply is no better bio media on the market. Heck, there is no other bio media even close to matching the quality of Matrix. Each piece is light weight and holds about an infinite amount of tiny holes for bacteria to colonize. The holes closer to the center of each piece are perfect for creating an anerobic environment for bacteria to colonize and digest nitrates. The holes closer to the edge of each piece, which are where the majority are located, are perfect for aerobic bacteria that consume ammonia and nitrites. All this results in better water quality is more capacity for livestock. Don't buy another brand of bio media, as it will be subpar to Matrix.

If you have aquarium, you need these
Seachem is a great product. I use these bio media in two of my Tidal 75 filters to provide space for beneficial bacteria to thrive. Like all bio media, in time the tiny pores will get clogged and no longer work and need to be replaced. This is a great replacement. 1 liter bottle will last me for quite some time.

Low Maintenence aquarium requirement!
I have used this for a while and it works as advertised. My goal was to get my aquariums to be as low maintenance as possible. So i did tons of research and found that bio-media is the most effective way to keep aquarium water at the right parameters. I now use this, purigen and filter floss and my water is not only crystal clear, but also perfect paramaters. My ph is always around 7-7.5 0 nitrates and nitrates and 0 ammonia! I do add water when the tank gets slightly lower and do a 25% water change every couple months! I couldnt ask for a better, low maintenance aquarium! I use this on a 29 gallon angelfish tank as well as a 60 gallon community tank.

CLEAR WATER / HAPPY FISH
I have a 55 gallon freshwater tank with 34 fish. I have a fluval 306 cannister filter with included media. I do regular 30% water changes weekly and filter cleanings weekly. My water was pretty clear from the front of the tank but looked like a brownish tint from the side (Not Tannins). There were a few times that it was absolutely crystal clear from the side view so I knew it could be clear again! I read that dissolved organic materials need to be removed from the water through water changes or filtration media. I tried to do 2-30% water changes a week and still the brownish tint from the side. I read about 2 Seachem products - 1 Liter Matrix Bio Media and 100ml Purigen Bags. I called the company to get the low down on this stuff and apperantly it is supposed to add much more bacteria to filter and also clarity to water by removing dissolved organic materials. I did a 30% water change, cleaned my filter, left old biomedia in and added the new Matrix. I got 75% of the new Matrix Bio media to fit in the cannister. I will fit the rest in when the new media starts building bacteria. I also added the 2 Purigen Bags to the cannister. I went to bed and in the morning the water was crystal clear. Its been 3 days and still crystal clear-from the front and crystal clear from the side. I am not sure if it was the Matrix or the Purigen that made my water clear but for the cost I would recommend getting both! I will update this if I find that this is just a temporary fix.

This stuff is great!
I use it in my 3 beta tanks. Keeps my water crystal clean and my ammonia at 0 with regular water changes.
