Panang Curry Paste (Pate De Curry Panang), 14 oz

Excellent flavor for home cooking. I found a recipe and started making a Panang curry sauce because I liked it so much when I ordered it from a local Thai restaurant. This curry is delicious with salmon or chicken. I have already used up the first tub and ordered a second. Highly recommend.

I’ve bought this Panang twice now and it is every bit as good as what I get at my local Thai restaurant. Definitely follow the directions on the package. It really needs the fish sauce and sugar. But what really makes it 10/10 to the restaurant is adding kaffir lime leaves. I found the dried ones work great. Just rehydrate them and they add the flavor that makes Panang really shine. Spice level on this Panang is perfect for me. Also note that I don’t use it all in one sitting. There is enough in the tub for my wife and I to get four batches out of it. I split it into four and Foodsaver three of them for the freezer. Frozen, this curry will last for months if not years. But needs to be Foodsavered.

I first had Panang curry at a local Thai fusion place a few years ago and was hooked. I decided to try and make it myself and quickly realized making my own curry paste wasn’t going to happen since I don’t have a good Asian market nearby and some of those ingredients are not available in most grocery stores. So, I checked out a few YouTube chefs and they named this Arroy-D curry paste as a solid choice that tends to be widely available. Full disclosure, I have not tried any others yet, this was my first foray into homemade curry. So I pretty much followed Jet Tila’s recipe off YouTube using this curry paste and it turned out really good. You can raise and lower the spice level depending on the curry paste/coconut milk ratio. I also think that “frying” the curry paste first in a little oil really does make a big difference in opening up all of the flavors. Overall I don’t think you can go wrong with this brand. Although I’m sure there are better options out there, I think this is most likely one of best widely available curry paste brands out there. I also have the red curry paste which I’m looking forward to trying in a week or so.

The flavor is nice but too salty. Adding enough coconut milk/ broth to dilute the salt causes the flavor of the curry itself to become too bland. Need a higher spice ratio with less salt.
