Desk Top Publishing with QuarkXPress 2016

Essential reading for any QuarkXpress 2016 user and great for anybody switching from other packages. I considered myself an advanced user until I read this. This book highlights the jump forward Quarkxpress 2016 has made with improvement in consumer usability and user requested features. If you're not sure how to do something, it will be covered in this book. Excellent.

The absolute best Quark manual and the only one worth having. Written and laid out clearly and logically. Even if you believe you have little more to learn about QXP, Martin Turner will teach you more, with humour and intelligence.

Fantastic the best QuarkXpress yet

Very clear and really easy to follow instructions and guidance on using this software, some features of which I have actually ever known how to use properly before and I have been a user since version 1. This book will be next to my computer at all times just in case something needs clarification or I need a better production workflow solution. Well done Martin this is a really useful tool. Thank you :)

A really bad book! Sometines it says things like 'This panel has some complicated funtions, you can best expirement with it' without explaining any function...(!). But that is why I bought this book: to list and explain complicated functions! The same goes for HTML5 animations: it shows the panel and says 'you can use this to add interactive functions' but does not go into any of the options explaining how! Worse: if you are not an updater like me but a novice, there is no wat you can ever learn even the basics with this book. Waste of money this book.

Not as helpful as Quark's own user guide.

Eins vorweg: Ich bin QuarkXPress Fan und Anwender, daher ' obwohl ich auch InDesign besitze und ab und zu nutze ' wahrscheinlich nicht ganz neutral. Ich hab mir Martin Turners Buch gekauft, da es zeitgleich mit der Veröffentlichung der 2016er Version erschienen ist. Ich wollte ein paar mehr Details dazu, wie man QuarkXPress noch besser in der Praxis einsetzen kann, und nicht nur ein "Handbuchersatz". Deutschsprachige Bücher sind zwar angekündigt aber gibt es noch nicht. Das Englisch in diesem Buch ist meiner Meinung nach sehr einfach und gut verständlich, daher kein Problem für mich. Mag jeder anders sehen, daher vielleicht vor Kauf eine Leseprobe mit "Blick ins Buch" ausprobieren. Das Buch erklärt viele Konzepte von QuarkXPress, die vielleicht sonst nicht so viel Fokus bekommen, wie z.B. Job Jackets. Und natürlich alle die Funktionen, die so viel Vorschusslorbeeren bekommen haben, wie das Umwandeln von PDFs in bearbeitbare Objekte, Copy&Paste von Diagrammen aus Excel und die neuen HTML5 Publikationen, mit der man mit zwei, drei Klicks "Flipbooks" fürs Web erstellen kann. Ich finde das Buch hervorragend. Nicht nur, weil es Konzepte und neue Funktionen von QuarkXPress 2016 gut beschreibt. Nein, der wahre Wert liegt in den Hintergrundinfos zu Print, Design, Gestaltung, Druck- und Veredlungsprozessen. Für mich, mehr Mediengestalter/Setzer und weniger Designer, waren die Hintergrundinfos zu Gestaltungsrastern sehr wertvoll. Designer, die vielleicht sich nicht mit Druckprozessen auskennen, können bestimmt gute Infos zu Druckprozessen aus dem Buch ziehen, auch wenn es sich mit SWOP im Farbmanagement eher an den angelsäsischen Raum wendet. Einfach durch ECI ersetzen, dann klappt's auch für Deutschland ;-) Typo- und Markengestaltung (Brand) sind hervorragend erklärt, ganz unabhängig von QuarkXPress. Daumen hoch! Lange nicht mehr so ein gutes Fachbuch gelesen. Wenn es jetzt noch auf Deutsch verfügbar wäre' ' vielleicht noch und ein besserer Druck, das Buch scheint amazons Print-on-demand zu sein: Schriften eher tiefgrau als Schwarz. Bilder sind alle s/w und sichtbar aufgerastert. Aber immer noch so, dass die Qualität noch gerade ok ist. Schlägt sich ja auch im Preis nieder, viel günstiger als andere, vergleichbare Bücher.

I upgraded severely (from QuarkXpress v4.1 to QuarkXpress2016!) and had a steep learning curve ahead of me. I purchased a copy of a manual recommended highly as THE manual to use in training sessions (870 pages!). It fell way short of meeting the challenge. Then I purchased the book listed here. Not even in the same universe! Exceptionally well-written, the contents brings some 40 years' industry experience into the content, providing a great deal of peripheral insights like proper grammar, syntax, punctuation, paper types/uses, design principles, work flow and MORE. EXCELLENT!

A good exploration of not only QuarkXpress, but of layout, typography and printing. Not the best choice for newcomers to either the program or design fields, but an excellent choice once you have some familiarity with the tools and terminology. Would have preferred some additional content for digital publishing and layout, but overall it's a solid guide.

I've been through most of the book since buying this a few weeks ago so I feel like I'm ready to give an informed opinion. This is a well laid out book by somebody who knows what he's talking about. Included are some items about desktop publishing and workflow. It covers the subject adequately and is well laid out. Another bonus is that the author is active on Youtube and in the Facebook Quark group and makes a lot of videos that do a good job explaining the program. You won't go wrong picking Martin Turner to be your guide through this program if you're new to Quark.
