Database Systems: Design, Implementation, & Management

Great Intro to SQL
Had to buy for the class... however, for someone new to SQL/relational DB, this book was well written, detailed enough, full of examples and visuals (which help tremendously with understanding the concepts). I also used a MS SQL book that was much more technical- with more code, but very hard to read.

Excellent
I liked it as it has many details about DB

Great for big DBs, maybe too much for small DBs
If you want to create a quick database for a small number of users with low CRUD (create, read, update, delete) operations for your data this book is way more than you need. However, if you need to create a database for many users, with many Entities, a high number of CRUD operations, and gets high performance . . . then this is a great book for you. This book offers many examples in multiple flavors of SQL, so you get a well rounded education on Relational Database Management Systems. If you just want something quick & dirty, there are better, cheaper, faster options.

3.5/5; It's okay.
Its an okay textbook; I rented it for my class this past semester. Kind of a drag to read at some points, but the information is mostly there and as a whole I wouldn't say its the worst of its kind. It's at least written well enough that the information is easy to understand. The lack of answers provided to the review questions is pretty annoying though; and if you're looking for something to self-educate it's not bad as a tool for understanding some of the fundamentals of DB design & SQL, but you'll definitely want more than just this. I would give it 3.5 stars if amazon allowed that. Not the worst textbook I've had to read but nothing to write home about.

It was the textbook required for my class. Works way better than a paper book

I can attest that this book is garbage. It is poorly written
Normally, I don't post reviews on books. But this text is the most frustrating mess I have ever read in academia. As a former college professor, with many years of experience in the technology field, I can attest that this book is garbage. It is poorly written, using overly verbose, inconsistent language, to explain what are very simple concepts. "Entities" are used for "tables", for example. I could care less about the authors' "many years of experience". I am certain they are able to do their day jobs in database administration, coding, and maintenance just fine, but as educators they are complete incompetents. My recommendation is to never buy this book as a learning tool unless it is required for your course. My recommendation to Professors is to fight vehemently against your curriculum administrators if they even mention utilizing this text. Normally, I'm against book burning, but I'll make an exception for both "Mein Kampf" and this text.

Thorough, Well-Organized
This book does a good job of connecting the theory of database design with the details of SQL.

Absolutely essential: Buy this book if you have ever thought of ever using or making a database
This is an excellent resource, it describes database systems very well, and teaches the reader how to make a database system that is rock solid. It is difficult to read as other reviewers describe due to the subject matterhaving a diverse and steep learning curve. The primary focus of the book is clearly relational databases (SQL) but does discuss NoSQL databases. If you master the information in this book and you have a use-case for NoSQL, it will be a trivial concern as 99% of the book actually applies to all database concepts. Some topics are quite difficult to understand, but there are no other ways to more clearly describe them, it's the nature of the work. Later DBA works relies on all of this information exactly. Also, don't cheap out and buy an earlier edition, buy this one.

Expensive and hard to read
Like other textbooks, it's insanely overpriced. It's very difficult to read, using extremely verbose, technical language. Somehow, it manages to be excessively long and still fails to effectively convey information.Content-wise, I feel it focuses too much on large databases in an enterprise setting at the expense of small databases in a personal or small business setting. I'm not an expert, so I can't really speak to how comprehensive or accurate it is.If you need it for a course, you don't really have much of a choice, but if you're looking for a book for your own use, keep looking.
