Just the job

I'm not really the type of person to write reviews, I genuinely find them either full of unnecessary gushing praise, or overly nit-picking and critical. However, after trying to "read" this book for a few months, my frustrations are starting to show. I get the distinct feeling that the people who designed this this book did not actually design it to be read.Rather it is structured like a coffee-table book. You pick it up and you flick through it. The book has way too many distracting elements that draw your eye away from the poorly organised main text. For one, the captions for the oversized example images are almost the same size and weight as the main text and they are aligned closely to it. The visual Glossary elements again, are basically mini paragraphs that look the same. The example images are all over the place and do not have any really rhyme or reason as to their placement (in terms or readability) . Not only that, the examples have little bearing to the point being made in the corresponding text.I will make the caveat that I have come to this book as someone who is both a speed reader and someone who normally reads far more structured technical manuals, but it is still far more difficult to read this book than it should be, especially as the ultimate goal of the goal is to be give a foundational understanding of a discipline. It's a shame, because the information when I manage to follow it, is fantastic. It really is a useful resource.It just is too.......busy. I find it ironic that something that is trying to how to teach young designers how to be better visual communicators, is so muddled and unfocused in its messaging.It makes a nice coffee table book though. Pretty.

The book is amazing but when it arrived it was scratched and marked from being squeezed into tight amazon packaging. I've kept the book as its too much effort to send back.
