A fun toy, FOR PROGRAMING and TINKERING
This is not, and will not be (at least in the near term) a product for the typical end user. One other person commented that this is also only good for those that are experienced programmers... I would like to point out that is not entirely true either ... There are some resorces available that will help you get started with programing with this device. I am not an expert programmer, i don't even consider myself a good programer, but I'm using this device to learn a lot of things... I've wanted to learn more programming, however a big issue with me is that I just didnt know what to make / didnt have anything interesting to work on... This device changes that and makes the process of learning a fun experience for me. Learning with this device will further my abilities and make me more marketable, not because I can program a Kinect but because I'm motivated to learn more programing in general because of the Kinect. If your kind of a geek, and want a toy to play with, something that will challange you to learn some new things and have fun while you are at it, this is a pretty cool item to pick up! If you want something to plug into your computer that will make your computer do some neat things out of the box, you might want to move on and get a different toy. Additional Note: You are going to want to have a decent computer to plug this into... I'm getting ready to upgrade my very old dual core system, but this thing is killing my computer right now... Anytime I start talking to this device my CPU utilization runs solid at 100% and it is not giving me a very good frame rate on the video feeds. THIS IS NOT THE SENSORS FAULT, I'm just putting a note here that your computer does make a difference with this device! ... That being said, I am still playing with it and enjoying my time learning about the product.

Nice innovative product! Truly a prelude to the future of motion-sensing technology!
Microsoft has really made a comeback in the realm of innovation. When I first played the Kinect for XBOX in 2010, I was amazed at how a device like this exists, when you can control almost anything with just your gestures. Something like this could probably replace the computer mouse. What I like about the Kinect for Windows is that it is truly a product of the future designed for today. If you watch a lot of superhero films, particularly from Marvel Comics, you'll probably see a lot of technology like this on their computers in the films and not even realize it actually exists in real life. After watching one, I always loved the idea of controlling my computer with just gestures. It can be pretty cool and pretty fun. What I dislike is that Microsoft has no official software for this unit to allow motion-sensing or gesturing on Windows 7. These devices are really designed for developers to make their own software. So, if you're like me and not a software developer you may find it hard to find software already made to run this unit. You can find downloadable software (usually at a cost) that can run with this. I used Kinemote Free Software. Using gesturing with this device can be quite cumbersome, as it cannot always detect your hands when navigating through Windows. You may suffer arm fatigue pretty soon after using this for a few seconds. Its a great idea but this thing has a while before it can replace a mouse. It needs some adjustments. I recommend this device to developers primarily because this is a device that you can use to write your own hand gesture software. I still give it 4 out of 5 because no one else has come up with something this close yet for the consumer like Microsoft. A- for effort!

Quite impressive device, need more support
The Kinect technology is impressive and the potential to use it under Windows and/or Mac OS X is amazing. It need more support from developers but we are very happy so far with the device. I recommend it. And yes, it has more precision than the more cheap XBOX 360 version.

Great innovation but not for consumers
This is an amazing product. It can recognnize body joints and movement just by looking at you. However, be aware this for developers ONLY. It coming with nothing that will help you use it is any way. You have to go on the web and find tutorials and demos from microsoft.com and coding4fun.com. You MUST have, and be proficient with Visual Studio. Don't buy this unless you has extensive experience with C++ or VB.NET and know how to use references and libraries. It is bit like buying a PC in the eighties - You had to know what you wanted to do with it. If you have the knowledge and have an application to create a truly remarkable UI then get this, otherwise wait for someone to make you a consumer product out of this.

Too soon to be useful; may change soon.
This product is hardware only. No manual; no software. Plug it into Windows 8 Developer Preview and drivers download, but that's it. Install the Software Development Kit (SDK) and you can see the crudest demos. I also downloaded a couple of third party tools, none of which worked. Right now, it's a paperweight. Hopefully, when Windows 8 Consumer Preview comes out 2/29/11, this Kinect will become useful. More likely, it will take months. By which time, the price will come down. Wait, unless you're a developer. Details: Amazon deletes a link here, so search for supersite kinect for professional evaluation of this package as it stands right now (could change anytime).

Took some experimentation to get it going
Didn't work initially, because the latest drivers do not work with Windows 10. You have to use the version 1.8 drivers, not 2.0. once I got it working, it was surprising how well it did work, there's almost no lag whatsoever. Surprising for a USB based video device.

This was a great product. It allowed us to work quickly on figuring out new tools and integrating it with existing ones. Multi-touch works seamlessly and integrates well. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a better way to work on large screens.

I received the wrong sensor. I received an Xbox1 sensor as opposed to a XBOX360 for Windows sensor. Is it possible to receive the correct sensor?
