Auto shuts off!
Very cool little train. Can go forwards and backwards, LIGHTS AND SOUNDS and AUTO CUTS OFF.

Excellent Engine
First; it’s strong and can haul a lot over humps and turns with ease. Second, it has buttons to engage forward, reverse, and pause motion. Lastly, when it’s off, the drive axle disengages so a child can free play without damaging the motor or drive axle. If your child is playing with the engine and moves it against it’s desired direction, the wheels will click and drive axle is wearing. It can handle it, but over time, the drive axle will completely wear down and no longer engage when activated (engine will run, but wheels will not forcefully move).I know this because I’ve owned two of these engines (one used has this issue with the worn drive axle gear).Great Engine but can be broken; be careful buying used/pre-owned

On the expensive side, but a quality Brio piece that will last for years and years.
I bought Brio trains and tracks for my son as a child that have now been passed on to his children. When I saw this battery operated engine, I bought it for them and they LOVE it. As toddlers, sometimes they trip over the tracks trying to pull the train and get frustrated after all the time they spent putting it together. With this engine pulling the little cars, they're just thrilled!!

Great train until the motor broke, but Brio honored their warranty.
Had I reviewed this train in the first 5-6 mos. of ownership I would have given it 5 stars. I bought it for my 3 and 6 year old for Christmas a couple years ago. It has two different modes, a freewheel mode and a driving mode. The driving mode was able to pull several brio train-cars on a full battery charge (3-6 cars worked fine, but going over the overpasses was a bit of a struggle and it certainly couldn't haul much more than that). Changing the batteries is not as easy as it could be, but an adult with a small screwdriver can get it done in about 2 minutes. It did go through batteries (2 AAAs) a little faster than I had hoped (I think after the first two weeks or so of steady use after last Christmas I had to replace the batteries). The motor just gave out sometime after 6 mos. of normal use by the kids; thankfully Brio customer service was solid and once I shared proof of purchase and described the issue they sent out a new train which, so far, has kept working as advertised. Moving this back to a 4 star for them actually honoring their warranty, and it’s a fun little train too.

Little train with big power!
I absolutely love this train! I chose it in particular because it takes 2 batteries as opposed to 1, implying that it’s a bit stronger than the smaller green battery operated train and it is! The battery lasts a pretty long time and it can easily go up slopes and even push other trains up with it. It’s also held up extremely well to my toddler constantly throwing it, accidentally stepping on it, knocking it off the counter, leaving it running on its side…. Every time a new incident happens I’m mentally preparing myself to shell out another $40 but nope, it’s good to go! My two year old calls it Choo and loves it so much. Absolutely recommend if you’re looking for a battery powered train!

Good battery life!
Absolutely adorable - after 2 days of frequent play, the batteries did NOT need to be changed (unlike like one with the rotating cement mixer and coal car). Has really cute sound effects, too.

Well built train for hours of fun
The media could not be loaded. This is a well built train that is worth every bit of its price. It is strong and capable of pulling 5+ cars (probably more) on flat tracks and at least 2 cars on the hilly tracks I've built (see video). The running lights and choo choo noises are a nice touch too. (Sound disabled in the video for privacy.)It was smart of the designers to incorporate the on/off toggle so that it can be used for free play (gears disengaged, rolls freely, won't damage the motor) as well as powered play (forward and reverse). The only downside is that it will have trouble on sharp curves (runs off the track or gets stuck) because of the long wheelbase. But as long as your tracks have broader curves it will run fine.Overall this is a great way to bring life to wooden train sets.

Poor design
It was constantly falling off of the tracks we built. There are lots of better options out there. This one doesn’t turn well at all.
