Teaching and Learning in Art Education: Cultivating Students’ Potential from Pre-K through High School

Absolutely beautiful book starting with the Front Cover! Dr. Sickler-Voigt has children’s artworks from all over the world. It is amazing to see what these kids can do! I was very impressed with the extent of the art educational theory and standards that are in each chapter. Her book also assists educators with pertinent questions at the end of each chapter. Dr. Sickler-Voigt adds informative teaching tools on her book’s website that can be downloaded for free. They are excellent learning tools! Dr. Sickler-Voigt takes you on a journey with her descriptions of each featured artist. She explains very well the amazing artworks and the reasons they have created them. Very heartwarming dedication to Lidice at the very beginning of the book.

This book is being used by my grad school art ed professor and I can see why! Highly recommended for those interested in doing a deep dive into art ed curriculum.

In general it’s a great book & pretty thorough but needs some updates. Apparently the author is working on a newer version. Great visuals and examples of Art throughout history & a great teaching tool. Book arrived damage but Amazon was great about a better replacement.

Beyond addressing art teaching content (lesson planning, assessment, studio media, etc.), this text predictably promotes contemporary values in teaching (choice-based, open-ended values, instructor-student equality, etc.) as well as, encouraging instructors to teach on social ethics regarding controversial issues. For some this might seem heavy-handed and beyond the general purview of a public school art classroom. There is generous representation of international children's art examples, but it comes up short on presenting, high-quality professional artist's work. Unfortunately, the narrow margins push text deep into the gutter, requiring the book to be fully open, and the binding couldn't handle the stress of one semester's use. (See pictures.)

Provides great modern exampled like Nick cave

$70 for a book it would have been nice if it didn’t get bent and ruined when boxed and before I even got it. Need for school so don’t have time to return. Just bummed it won’t have as much life as it should have had.

I am now solely using this book to prepare my own preservice candidates to create lessons that encourage their future students to thrive in the journey to create meaningful art. This is an essential and contemporary resource for anyone who teaches art or prepares preservice candidates to teach art in the PreK-12 classroom.

This resource gives teachers the language and strategies to teach art at any grade level.
