Not sure, but works on my 2001 Tacoma.

Will this work on a 1997 4Runner?

It should be fine, I have a 1996 Corolla and 2000 4Runner with the same type of key. Both my vehicles keys are non chipped so it was easy to make a duplicate. If it is chipped, it’d does require a lock smith to program and cut your key.
