The mental wellbeing of our children is shockingly poor. Marc Brackett, author of PERMISSION TO FEEL, knows why. And he knows what we can do. "We have a crisis on our hands, and its victims are our children." Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale Universityโs Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. In his 25 years as an โemotion scientist,โ he has developed a remarkably effective plan to improve the lives of children and adults โ a blueprint for understanding our emotions and using them wisely so that they help, rather than hinder, our success and well-being. The core of his approach is a legacy from his childhood, from an astute uncle who gave him permission to feel. He was the first adult who managed to see Marc, listen to him, and recognize the suffering, bullying, and abuse heโd endured. And that was the beginning of Marcโs awareness that what he was going through was temporary. He wasnโt alone, he wasnโt stuck on a timeline, and he wasnโt โwrongโ to feel scared, isolated, and angry. Now, best of all, he could do something about it. In the decades since, Marc has led large research teams and raised tens of millions of dollars to investigate the roots of emotional well-being. His prescription for healthy children (and their parents, teachers, and schools) is a system called RULER, a high-impact and fast-effect approach to understanding and mastering emotions that has already transformed the thousands of schools that have adopted it. RULER has been proven to reduce stress, depression and burnout and enhance to encourage higher academic achievement. This book is the culmination of Marcโs development of RULER and his way to share the strategies and skills with readers around the world. It is tested, and it works. This book combines rigor, science, passion and inspiration in equal parts. Too many children and adults are suffering; they are ashamed of their feelings and emotionally unskilled, but they donโt have to be. Marc Brackettโs life mission is to reverse this course, and this book can show you how. Review: Must read for parents - I recently went to a networking event and had the pleasure of hearing Marc speak. I was so moved by his perspective and story I bought the book that day. He breaks emotional intelligence down in a way that all can digest and benefit from. Follow this man on Instagram! He's the real deal! Hopefully all schools make his approach a standard Review: Emotional skills is a pathway to getting back to ourselves: to humanity - I will gift this book to my younger self. The learning and practical, easy to apply strategies are not only useful but can save one from despair caused by lack of emotional skills. Humanity needs social and emotional learning more than ever.

Genuinely life altering
I've read a few books on Emotional Intelligence, including Daniel Goleman. But this one hits the spot for multiple reasons. While the title may make one feel that this is about kids, the insight it brought to me as I reflected on my own childhood experiences was painful at times - makes complete sense that someone helping me deal with emotions as a child would have resulted in different outcomes for me as an adult. Read it, once, twice and then again. This book truly has the power to change us and our relationships for the better.

Informative, compassionate and full of insight.
As it says. Itโs a compassionate empathetic approach to learning and dealing with, not just the stresses of everyday life we all succumb to, to the darker and more traumatic parts of life - some of unfortunately have the life shattering experience of enduring. It provides practical as well as theoretical advice proven results and a lot of references. If this was curriculum at school, I think Iโd of had greater help and intervention to deal with the ACEs In my life for which I scored 8/10. ( adverse childhood experiences). Worth the read and worth the changes it offers to implements. Cheap mood meter app to go with it Iโve been using for a month and has dramatically improved my personality disorder, mood disorders and home life. Bravo.
