Self-contained and portable = popular with the kids
This is as popular today as it was nearly 2 years ago when purchased for my then 7 year old girl and her six year old brother. It is excellent. 2 years on the kids enjoy setting up the hive and other Hexbug sets in so many varied configurations to give the bugs interesting challenges. The ground level allows you to place interactive pieces that spin and bend wherever you like and the kids love the freedom this gives them with their imagination.Due to its portability, it has done much car travel and visited grand-parents. It is robust/durable and stores other pieces within. Highly recommended. Compatible with the new V2 sets so there is fresh enthusiasm for it.I'll repeat here what I've said elsewhere about batteries: Over 2 years ago we bought a pack of 50 batteries cheaply online and surprisingly, we still have plenty of them available to us. We are not going through them at the speed I thought we would (and we have MANY bugs). Luckily the kids remember to switch the bugs off when not in use. Even if we went through the batteries faster, they are cheap when bought in bulk on-line. Just remember to dispose of them thoughtfully as they should not go to land-fill.

Great for younger kids to play with
This is the second set like this that I have bought, this one for a different grandson. We have a larger set for the bigger kids and this one is for the 3 yr old, the first set was for a 5 yr old. The boys love these hexbugs, they can be setup on a larger diningroom table as need be, or sprawled all over the den or livingroom floor. Parents and grandparents can have as much fun as they wish also. I did read somewhere that taking one of the corners off on the top section and using other track sections on it will allow the hexbug to have another exit method. We used a curved and straight piece dropping down over another track set. You may have to experiment to get the drop right..This set has pegs that can be moved with things like ramps or diverters, some or all can be used; they stay in place well. The case folds up and locks keeping the hexbug with it in one place. Can be easily thrown in a car as a take along for vacation play or visiting grandma or grandpa. You may want to buy extra hexbugs though to make it more fun.

Kids like them, and they're pretty neat to watch, but that's all you do
Hexbugs are pretty nifty little toys and I think they are very entertaining to watch, but unfortunately that's about all you can do with them: watch. They are not very engaging and don't demand much from a child's imagination or creativity. I would say of this set that at the very least your child will be able to build different courses for the bugs to run and it packs away very easily, however the pieces are pretty tough to get in and out of their respective slots/connections.Wouldn't buy any more of this stuff, looking for something more engaging for my non-couch-potato kids.

Lots of playtime for the cost
This was a Christmas gift for my 5 year old and he loves it still. Definitely NOT one of those toys that gets played with once and then sits for 6 months. For the price, we get a ton of use out of this. He loves coming up with new ways to attach his other track sets, building larger "towns" for his bugs. I think the whole nano line is a great toy set, relatively inexpensive, not too many moving pieces that can be broken, and interesting enough to keep my kid occupied by himself or with someone playing with him. The hive can fold up so he can take it when we have to go visit someone, and is fun enough to play with alone, without his other sets attached. So, three months later, it is still played with pretty often and has had no breakage or problems, despite being reconfigured many, many times.

Most of us love it...
I bought this for my 8 year old son for xmas... just something different and got a lot of good reviews here. Well, honestly, it seems he could care less about it. On the other hand... my 3 year old daughter LOVES it. In fact, I am going to be buying some more bugs and sets and just give them to her as birthday gifts to add to the set. She and I love it and bought a few other sets and have 4 bugs total currently... I definitely recommend getting some of the other sets with this so that you can build all different things. we got the spiral one and I think a starter kit. My daughter and I go round and round on this one with her shutting the gates and trapping the bugs in small spots and me opening the gates to let them run more free... they really are neat... it will be fun to see how this company evolves these and other micro-robots over time... its a fun concept and beats having real bugs or something else we have to feed. OH... and... our cats want me to add that they love watching these things too!

Stupid bugs
I mean the concept sounds cool but when you get down to it they're nothing more then little motors. They are loud and annoying and burn thru batteries like a fish drinking water. CRAZY! My kid will turn them on and lose interest in watching them after a couple minutes. Of course they don't get turned off they just sit there being loud and burning thru batteries. So the next time he goes to play with them I get to swap out all the batteries. If you buy hex bug branded batteries you will be paying a mint. Also remember not to leave the them laying around if you have little ones that put things in their mouths. With lithium batteries that can be fatal.

Kids all have a blast with this
I have four boys - 9,8,3, and 1 and they all enjoy playing with this. I bought it for the 3 year old for Christmas hoping that it would keep the hex bugs corralled and NOT under my stove or fridge! This does the trick and they love to sit and play with their hex bugs in their new home. I was very pleased to see that it comes with two of the little turnstiles as well as the teeter totter, lots of the little orange barricades and lots of extra black pegs which I assume are either just extra in case we lose pieces or these may be for us to wrap rubber bands around for another obstacle but I haven't done that since our one year old still puts everything in his mouth. I'm very pleased with this purchase and the fun it has provided so far. Oh I also really like that it folds and snaps shut. This keeps the one year old from running off with the hex bugs when nobody else is playing but the release to let the sides down is easy enough for our 3 year old to do on his own when he wants to play.

Highly recommend this toy!
Absolutely thrilled with this! My 3 year old daughter was given a different set for Christmas, the Hex 2 that is supposed to climb, but it was hopeless and even with new batteries, couldn't get up the tubes. We returned it and bought this. It is much more fun for little ones because they can play with the bugs rather than just watch them. There are gates to move around to direct the bugs, roundabouts that they 'play' on, a seesaw to go over and a ramp to go up and down. Even better is the fact that she can 'put the bugs to bed' by closing the case up, she then carries them around the house. It also means there's less chance of them getting lost, although I did find one in her picnic basket earlier! We bought three extra bugs to go with this, it comes with one.Highly recommend this toy!
