Cold Steel Trail Boss Axe, 27 Inch

This is basically a lightweight Boy's Axe, the blade length is very similar to other Boys' Axes, such as the Council Tool, Snow & Nealley, etc. (actually a bit longer blade, but it is still lighter overall due to the smaller sized eye and poll). Because this is an inexpensive axe, I think it's a great candidate as a dedicated root chopper, something you don't mind getting banged up a bit. I have been using it for brush clearing and I love it! Cuts right through vines. It does come with a slippery-feeling finish, which you should plan to sand off. But otherwise, it has a great balance and is very easy and natural-feeling to use. I read some concerns about the head coming loose--I have not experienced this yet myself, but axe heads can and do come loose, and sometimes need to be re-wedged or even re-hung. Honestly, when this does happen to mine, I would even consider bringing this down to a 24" handle, I think that would be an even better fit for the lightweight head like this, and it would make for a more compact "camp-axe" type of feel. Hard to find fault with this, even on the longer handle. Five stars.

Update: July 17, 2020 I will get to the point, this Axe has served me exceptionally well. I have cut down many trees in a wooded backyard with this axe. I let my wooded back yard get overgrown. Yeah I did. I had to put in the work to clear it. This baby has been a lifesaver. As noted earlier, it was received very sharp and I use a manual tool to keep it sharp. This is a top notch axe for any homeowner. I would definitely replace my axe with the same, if needed. I strongly recommend you buy. Why? Because it works. Update: Apri 18, 2020: This is the absolute perfect for a residential homeowner You would be making a mistake not buying this axe. First of all, it’s extremely sharp when it arrives. And trust me, when it comes to cutting wood that is the absolute most important part in my opinion. Second, I’ve had it for two seasons now doing yardwork in a Wooded back lawn and I love this Axe. Extremely durable and effective. I changed my rating from a four to a five Original comment: I will keep this simple. It's an axe. It cuts wood. If you don't need to cut a California redwood, this is all you need. If you have a humongous fallen Oak tree then you need to call somebody. Other than that, if you're a homeowner and just need an axe for small jobs around the house / yard other than what is described above - buy this axe. Good workhorse axe. Chopped a bunch of logs, no loosening of the head, staying sharp. 10/10, would buy again. Recommend for anyone who wants a useable axe that doesn’t cost a fortune.

Main gripe is that I feel the handle should be about a foot longer. It's really more of a long hatchet, but it would be nice to have a longer handle to just have it double as a walking stick. The wood the handle is made of isn't the best. I wrapped mine near the head to protect it more from over swings. This really wouldn't survive many bad hits. The sticker is an eyesore, but will mostly come off with use and some scrubbing. Performance though it is amazing for the price. This is very easy to backpack with. Like I said this is more of a middle ground between an axe and a hatchet. As a hatchet I'd say it goes above expectations. As an axe there is a lot lacking like the shot handle and small head. Just know what tools you need when you're getting them. It can split small logs and clear brush and small trees. You aren't going to be using this to fell great oaks or stock your home for the year with split wood as well as you could with an axe made for those tasks at a much higher price point. It has it's uses and people need to have reasonable expectations of the tools they need and use.

I bought this axe around 2023 and used it nearly every day until recently. The metal holds a true edge and the handle was very solid. Even weight made it useful for splitting wood and felling trees. This has been my favorite axe I have bought over the years, it works exceptionally well as a scouting axe though.

Out of the box I was impressed with how it looked and felt. It has a good edge on the blade just not razor sharp. The handle is beautiful and solid and straight. I went out to the shed to split some logs. It is shorter than what I'm used to and it felt so light that I was skeptical at first. I swung at the different logs and was able to spilt each one cleanly and with surprising ease. I wish I could give more stars, this item exceeded my expectations. If you spend time in the outdoors you will not regret having one. I highly recommend this product.

Absolutely love this little axe, it’s a lot sturdier and sharper than I expected and I’ve honestly considered buying another.

Impressive little axe out performed my hardware store axe. Have had this for over a year and out it to use, I love cold steel tomahawks and got this for tree branches ened up cutting a few decent size elms with it, last night had a pretty good storm and lost a full grown Bradford tree. I used this trail boss to cut it all up in the matter of an hour. My neighbor's make fun of me but this is a great little axe to keep around.

Excellent axe. Far exceeded my expectations for the price & reviews I have seen. Yes the reviews were good but this axe is fantastic. Almost ideal handle size, shape, (it is just about straight which makes for intuitive, ease of use & is safer overall) thickness, (nice & slender to allow flex for shock absorption & better grip that does not fatigue your hands or long periods of use) & length (for my use anyway). I am a huge fan of the Hudson Bay pattern as well. The weight of the head is just right. The head is tightly, straight & true with the handle. Just a few minutes will a file & my lanky puck & diamond stones & the bit was razor sharp. Good hard steel but easily takes an edge. I wish they made a hatchet with the exact same specifications, quality & similar price point. Just scaled down to about 14 inches as well as a mid-size pack axe about 20 inches long. I am a big fan of Cold Steel knives so I guess I shouldn't have been so surprised at the overall quality & ergonomics of this axe.
