Bought this from Word-of-Mouth recommendation
I bought this on the recommendation of someone I know. They said it had driven all manner of pest, ants, spiders, really all insects and mice from their home. I was skeptical. Here is my initial experience and I'll post an update to this after fall has passed. With in the first few hours, I noticed that crickets seemed to be confused and driven from hiding. Found studies after observing this a few days and noticing an overall reduction in numbers, that said it was effective on crickets. Spider population was unaffected by the unit itself but I suspect the effect that it seems to have on crickets may cause them to vacate and therefore reduce the spiders from lack of prey. After 2 0r 3 weeks crickets are for the most part gone. Spider are becoming less common too. The studies I found after noticing a change confirmed this, no direct effect on spiders but reduction of their food supply. I have also noticed what seems to be an increase in the number of dead spiders. I do not know if this is due to starvation or something else. It is interesting though. I have had mice in the past but have none to my knowledge at present. They tend to seek shelter at the first signs of cold weather so I will see soon enough. After the purchase I found studies that said this was a pretty effective device to keep mice out but only fair at getting results with existing mouse populations. I will likely keep a limited number of traps/poison out just in case. Don't want to relie solely on this. I do not have roaches but let someone use one of the units (I bought 2) that had moved into a rental house that apparently did have roaches with the promise to make a gift of this if it worked to remove their problem. They gave it back as totally ineffective, only thing they said is they seemed to see a little more roaches, if anything, and they would be near, within inches, of the unit. They did not seem confused. The studies I found said the only affect on roaches was perhaps slightly increased activity which used in conjunction with glue traps might make the traps slightly more effective. Ants, fleas, other insects. I can't comment on since there is no problems to remedy. All the studies I read after the fact said there was no affect on ants. Other insect no affect to limited results depending on species. My main reason for purchase was mice. I will update after I have experienced a season with this repeller. I wanted to add, these were advertised as treating up to 5000 sq ft unobstructed. I do not think they work well thru walls. My reason is with the 2 units I purchased the areas I have them in (garage and large kitchen/LR combo crickets are gone. I simply do not see or hear any. In adjacent rooms however, BR's, baths, etc., there is still a number, but it is dwindling, with the room farthest from the units having a larger number still present. Also there is a faint clicking sound from the unit, which is normal, but in the owner's manual it says some people are bothered by it. It doesn't bother me and is inaudible from say 8 feet or so. Just wanted to mention that so you'd know. Let's say I am somewhat impressed with this purchase at this time, more to come. It's been another couple of weeks since my review and I have noticed that the large black field crickets are a little less affected. They do venture in but don't stick around. We have had a cold snap for around 1 week, cool enough that mice would begin to move inside. A relative has found a couple in their home already. I have yet to see any evidence. No poison has been touched as of yesterday (10/09/12) and no mice in traps. It is 10/25/12 and no mice or any evidence thereof. Up until a couple of days ago it had remained pretty cool with overnite temps in the mid to upper 30's and it still is around 42-46 at nite now. Next week the forcast is 30 (perhaps less) overnite and upper 40's to 50, but I am beginning to be a little more impressed. It is 11/10/12 and no mice I know of. It's been cool enough, long enough, that they should have moved in by now. I believe this to work well in deterring mice from entering. It may cause them to enter other structures like your neighbors homes instead of yours. I know 1 of my neighbors complained to me in passing she had caught a couple mice in traps and stomped 1 to death because it was disoriented from poison (?). Told her about these. I would recommend these to anyone but advise not totally re-lie on them using a few strategic traps and bait boxes to ensure no problems. Better safe than sorry. I hope this helps! Have a good one! It is January 2015, I have moved in with a family member to care for them and my home is currently unoccupied. Utilities, including moderate heat maintaining about 60, have been kept. I have kept this working and placed fresh poison in the fall when mice enter more readily. I have no mice. I have found 2 dead from poison, which means they had set up residence in the house. I wonder if some mice are more tolerant. Spiders, crickets, and so on do enter. With exception to spiders, insect populations are minimal but must be large enough to maintain a less than moderate spider population. I do not know if this item is where the credit should be given, but these are facts, at least, in my case. Do I recommend this. ????? It can't hurt, and seems.... to help!

It works when used properly, at least with some animals.
When I saw this product, my first reaction was that it would not work: I have seen too many such gadgets, but after reading the many varied reviews (and being a compulsive researcher) I decided I had to try one for myself. At first, I just set it out where a chipmunk was digging in one of my wife's large flower pots. A day or two later, my wife and I were out by the pot with me trying to think of the best place to put it when, by chance, we noticed the chipmunk several feet away. I quietly turned the repeller so that one of the microphones was directed toward him, and he took off in a straight line in the opposite direction faster than I have ever seen him run. After I placed it, the chipmunk stopped coming to the plant, but began digging nearby. So, I found a place that seemed to be able to produce beams at both sites. Chipmunk did not return - until - a month or so later, I discovered he was back. Some work was being done on my house, and I discovered that someone had unplugged my extension cord in the garage. I plugged the extension back in and the chipmunk stopped returning. So, I had established that the sound is, in fact, produced as advertised and very annoying to chipmunks. I then began to check out some of the criticisms I had read in negative reviews, and I will now respond to some of those: 1. All it does is click: I put the device near my ear and heard it click. It was not just a series of clicks; rather a series of more like a tic-toc. I don't mean it sounded like a clock, rather that each click was followed by a slightly different click: rather like a piece of light metal was being stressed to make a click and then released to make a second sound as it returned to its initial state. Clearly, a piece of metal, or something similar was producing the high frequency sounds as the metal made the clicks. As I listened, I found that I could hear a faint, high-pitched sound of very short duration; no more than a second. I surmised that if I had chipmunk hearing capability, I would hear it louder and longer as well as other high-pitched sounds that I could not hear at all.. 2. It only works some times: In order to understand this one must realize that, unlike the low frequency sounds we are accustomed to, high frequency sounds travel in straight lines, much like light. They will reflect from hard surfaces, but will not go around barriers or around corners. So, the user of this product must find a place where a beam (or two) can be projected that the animal must - I repeat Must - pass through. There are two speakers, each of which projects sounds, and the beams come from those speakers and travel in the direction the speaker id pointed. The beams do have some width, but it did not seem to be wide enough to clear an eight-inch step riser. 3. It doesn't work for bats: This may be true; I didn't have any bats to test it on: however, I think that if it does work on bats it works in a different way. Bats use high frequency sounds to navigate in the dark and to locate prey, so I doubt that high frequencies annoy them the way they do with dogs or cats or chipmunks which have no use for such hight frequencies. I would expect, however, that the sounds might "jam" the bat's sonar so that insect hunting isn't very productive in the area. That wouldn't necessarily send the bats away entirely. This is just theorizing on my part, however, so take it for what it is.

The mice still live here UPDATED
We're in an old 1871 farmhouse that has had mice for years. About 10 days ago I placed 2 of these repellers in my basement and two in my boat. I've heard that these repellers take several weeks for max effect. As of now the status in the basement is that I've caught 3 mice - I'm looking forward to no mice but as of now my opinion is . . . wait awhile longer. No opinion on the boat yet. UPDATE it's now April 2012 and at this point there have been NO mice caught - so I am becoming a fan of this product. It's worth a try. I have also spoken with a neighbor who has the same device in his camper - no mice. 7/20/12 I really wanted these things to work, really. But the reality is I continue to catch mice only a few feet from the product (two in the basement) and I'm sorry to say they just don't work. Update 10/13/2012 I checked the boat (20 foot bass boat)even with two of these running withing the limited battery compartment I have found that a couple of mice have set up a rather nice nesting site so unfortunatly must say that my last review remains accurate . . . they don't work.
