Perfect fit, beat the pants off a new alternator ...
140amp brush pack replacement for a 1997 bmw e39 528i alternator. volts would fluctuate excessively when you rev and let off causing lights to dim briefly during deceleration. Perfect fit, beat the pants off a new alternator and turns out the carbon prongs were totally worn on my old brush pack so this did the trick.Install notes: I replaced this unit by only removing the air intake & elbow, alternator stayed in place. DISCONNECT BATTERY FIRST then remove back shielding on the alternator to get to the brush pack. Requires some hand yoga, but was a nice learning experience for a young shady tree mechanic. Carefully depress the prongs and release once in place during install (I used electricians tape held by my fingers to hold the prongs in while installing and then tugged on the tape until removed which released the prongs into place).

This did the trick!.My battery is now charging and my transmission is shifting perfect again!
This was for my 1997 E38 -BMW 740il, With the 140 AMP air cooled Alternator, My Transmission was giving me the FAILSAFE message. I found the battery was not holding a charge, So I had the battery charged up and THEN tested the Alternator on the car..My old voltage regulator did not pass the test. I drove the car for a few days.. The first day was awesome , the car shifted perfect and there was no problem..but the second day, after cold start..TRANS FAILSAFE MESSAGE again..(the voltage readings driving were 14.6) but the voltage readings before turning the key to start were 11.8 and that is not enough should be 12.6 or above ) SO I ordered this Voltage regulator and installed it.Also, remember it takes a few days to bed in the brushes to get a full operational amp charge to battery after install, So make sure your battery is fully charged or has been replaced if your having lstrange electrical problems due to low battery voltage. Anyway this did the trick .My trans is shifting perfect!

arrived quick, perfect fit on a bosch 140a alternator from a 1997 528i. like the reviewer above, i did not have to remove the belts or alternator to swap regulators. highly recommended.
