Best live recording I own
I have a lot of live cd's - I think that's the only way you get the true energy and spirit of the music. This is easily the best I have heard - and continue to listen to every day. Please don't think the Chieftains or the Wolftones, as though I love those artists, this music is much more vibrant and energetic than the older classic Celtic artists. The other nice thing about GBS is their shifting tempos. The furious pace of Mari Mac, Old Black Rum, the unbelievable version of Lukey and The Night Pat Murphy died are rousing romps - traditional music with a new-found (no pun intended) energy. Mid-tempo songs like I'm a Rover, the incredibly sung General Taylor and Excursion around the Bay succeed with just as much sizzle. The best slow songs include Boston and St. John's and Captain Wedderburn - both truly heart-wrenching songs which develop Sean, Bob, Darrell and Alan into three dimensional individuals, not just carousing b'ys.Take a chance on this one and you'll be HOOKED!!! See you at the next show in Boston.

This is my review of GBS...
Being a Newfie, I was taken aback when I heard this band on a Saturday morning, way back when on KXCI, late 90's, early 2000, while I was 'painting my roof' in Tucson, AZ; I've been a fan ever since. The songs hit home for me as I remember my parents singing these songs on a Saturday night, drinking screech and playing cards with my aunts and uncles and older cousins. There's a good video called 'Celtic Tides', I believe, and it speaks of the music of the Maritime Providences of Canada, Ireland and Scotland; good stuff...I haven't gotten back to Newfoundland since we came to America; I want to re-visit my homeland someday, as well as County Waterford, Ireland, where we came from such a long time ago, before that damn bus hits me...erin go braugh...MPower...

New to this band
I'll be honest- I had never heard of this band until I decided to download something "ocean-ish." This album definitely fulfilled what I was looking for! I appreciate a good live album for the energy the audience seems to give the band- and this audience definitely fueled this band!So- if you are looking for a rollicking, loud and enthusiastic nautical time, I'd highly recommend this album. Now, if someone could tell me how to get Donkey Riding out of my head.....

Even Better Live
This collection of live tracks is great and really showcases just how wonderful these guys are. I think my favorite is still The Night Pat Murphy Died, but there are so many other great tracks on here that you can't go wrong. If you've been looking for a good crossover band to introduce your friends to Celtic music, you can't go wrong with Great Big Sea and this is definitely their best album to date - it's good time music no matter what your favorite style.
