Celebrating 30 years since its TV debut, Roots: The Complete Collection brings together for the first time all the original episodes, sequels and extras of the award-winning series in one box set, comprising Roots: The Original Series 4-Disc Box Set, the 1979 sequel Roots: The Next Generation, and, for the first time on DVD, Roots: The Gift, a movie that focuses on the relationship between two of the slaves of the original series. Based on Alex Haley's best-selling novel about his African ancestors, the acclaimed US TV mini-series Roots garnered widespread popularity in the 1970s and to this day remains one of the most watched programmes in history, with the ratings for the series finale still the third highest-rated US program of all time, (behind the final episode of MASH and the "Who Shot JR?" episode of Dallas). Roots follows several generations in the lives of a slave family. The story begins with Kunta Kinte (played by LeVar Burton), a West African youth captured by slave traders and shipped to America in the 1700s. Torn from his homeland, stripped of his dignity, his rights and even his name, in torment and anguish he is brought to the slave markets of the new world. He tries, but fails, to escape before accepting he can never return to Africa. The film traces his life and those of his family, depicted up until the Civil War where Kunte Kinte's grandson gains emancipation. It captures generations of love, tears, pain, strife, sacrifice and happiness, reminding us of the resilience and resource of the human spirit even under crippling injustice. But Roots was more than just a quality drama, it had a wider impact on society. It persuaded American audiences to regard their history from a black perspective, and to see how--against odds far more desperate than those the pilgrims faced--Africans laid claim to their status as free African-Americans. It triggered a craze for genealogy and changed forever the way black people were depicted on TV. Total SCAM!!!
First let me say that this rating is NOT for the movie/mini-series itself, rather it is a commentary on the seller. I haven't seen the mini-series since I was a young child and yet it stuck with me after all these years so much so that I wanted to share it with my teenaged son. In my opinion this series should be required viewing for ALL high school students. Imagine my grave disappointment and unabashed anger when, having carved out time in my and my son's very busy schedules to sit down and watch this important film together, I put in the first disc only to find that it and the rest of the discs are unwatchable here in the US. It has the wrong region code so no player here in the United States can play the content on the disc. I spent $40 on absolutely nothing!!! Beware anyone contemplating buying from this seller, there was nothing in the description of the movie boxed set that said that it had the wrong region code, it's nowhere to be found on the box or on the discs themselves either. I haven't been able to figure out how to get my money back yet but I hope to be able to at some point. ~t*)

Thank you Amazon for my refund. I sent ROOTS back to the seller (Mars Movie). I did order a magnifying glass through Amazon. I received the order on time and loved it. I am once again a loyal Amazon customer.

ROOTS 30th ANNIVERSARY BOX SET http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000W70GY6/ref=cm_rdp_product "ROOTS 30th ANNIVERSARY BOX SET": I find it hard to believe that 30 years has passed since is saw the tv series & due to me staying with my Step-Mum at the time, i was never allowed to miss an episode & i dare not speak while it was on or she would roar at me like a lion saying 'be quiet' (well, that was me told) I was pleased & surprised to see it on "Amazon" & cheaper than anywhere else, this is what i call "a must have item". I was in my late teens/early 20's when i first saw it. Roots made me aware of slavery & how people were bought & sold which really shocked me, i know it started over one or two centuries but it opened my eyes as to what went on, they never mentioned much about it at School. All i can remember is the terrible sale of Africans in to the life of slavery. and through the magic of tv i saw the entire miniseries, i am now 56yrs old & live alone. Explanation: I am disabled, housebound & have to take medication daily which in turn causes short term memory loss(no! i ain't looking for sympathy, far from it) i wanted you to know i am disabled because it makes sense when i say, 'i know that i am going to enjoy watching the "Roots 30th Anniversary box set' what with my bad memory & 30yrs on i've probally forgotten a lot about Roots & i'm really looking forward to watching it again & there's more! Included in the box set is Roots - The next Generation(new to dvd) the 12 hour miniseries continues the saga from the post-Civil war era to Alex Haley's ancestral discovery, & for the icing on the cake you get "Roots: The Gift (new to dvd) 'The Heartwarming Holiday Movie' & here i was just expecting to get "The Roots 30th Anniversary Box Set" but boy was i wrong!, but i was blown away & pleasantly surprised to receive two box sets & a movie. You get all this for £8.79 plus Amazon delivers this Colletion free of charge. I would recommend this box set to anyone & am not sure if this box set is on offer or not as there is up to 70% of dvd'a just now, so for the sake of £8.79 you would be buying a gripping & powerful drama series, well acted plus you get two miniseries & a film too. Nice one Amazon *****
