Not just for reptiles
We actually use this to help maintain breeding level heat in our Dubia roach enclosure.We breed a few of the more expensive insects used in feeding our bearded dragon.This pad is of great help keeping heat low where they dwell and breed.

Very Impressed!
I measured the power consumption with sophisticated test equipment (HIOKI PW3390 Power Analyzer); the consumption which will be the same as the heat (Watts) emitted by the heating element and it is variable from about one-watt to fifty-one watts; the dial is fairly smooth adjustment; so in a constant temp environment you can set it and forget it; if the environment changes much, you may want a thermostat control; i have no plans to add a thermostat though; and at 51 Watts, it is very warm and yet I can hold my hand on it 'forever', it will not burn me; it is uniformly warm; so it reminds me of a heating pad, the kind you might use on a strained back or shoulder. My plan is to use it to extend queen rearing season (western honeybees) and it will be kept in a water-proof environment in that case. Very please with this device and it is electronically controlled: the variable adjustment is not a simple rheostat, it is a phase-controlled SCR (or TRIAC) circuit, so it is a solid-state device; that may be a true best outcome, but may be an achilles heel in a lightning-prone region; so, i would consider a 'cube' type surge suppressor which contains MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) to protect the solid-state portion of this heater; the element is very nice and it is resistive in a way that distributes the heat perfectly; so it is a very thoughtful design;

Hard To Gauge
I bought this adhesive heating pad as an alternate heating source for an indoor tortoise. He is a spoiled rotten tortoise who normally sleeps in a heated doggie bed (with curtains). So, my review is based on that. I am not a regular reptile owner, per se.Why did I buy this heating pad? Well, I have a second pet carrier that is long inside. It's one of those plastic pet carriers with a caged door and top window. My tortoise loves going in there for naps.I bought a second doggie bed and put that inside the long carrier but my tortoise loved it so much that he stayed inside for several days. It gets cold overnight so I put a heating pad under this doggie bed too. But the problem is, the tortoise would get out of the warm bed and just rest near the cage opening and not move. It gets cold there so I tried to figure out how to heat the entire length of the carrier. That's how I found this adhesive heating pad.I placed it on the bottom of the carrier, right at the front of the cage near the door and put a towel on top. I've only used it a couple of times and the tortoise seemed to like it but I didn't turn it up that high because you can't tell what level of heat it is using.I've read similar complaints about this pad from other reviewers but I bought one anyway, knowing there wasn't a gauge. But I get nervous using it because I don't know how much to turn the dial. It's hard for me to feel how warm it is because the tortoise is usually lying on it and I don't want to wake him up.Veterinarians say the only way to accurately gauge the temperature of a heating pad is to use a thermometer but I don't know how I would do that.So, I am not using this heating pad adhered to a glass surface. As I said, I am placing it underneath a towel on the bottom of a carrier. I have been careful to watch it and make sure it doesn't get too warm but I don't use it that often.I wish it had little notches or words that said "Low," "Medium" and "High." That would help a lot. But the strip does heat up. That's why I am only giving it three stars.

Fantastic heat matt with built in rheostat that generates gentle heat
I am truly amazed how well this heat mat performs for the money. I set the temp and monitored in constantly for about 3 days. As the temps in my house change, so do the temps in the grow tub. But just as my house only changes a few degrees, so does the tub. So it's just like nature getting down to as low as 75° and as high as 78°. Room temps stay between 69° and 72°.I have a silicone matt that this heater is sitting on, with the grow tub above it. I put little spacer feet on the grow tub so air can move. I put my hand on the heater when it was at temp....didn't feel hot to me. So this heat is a very gentle heat. I like it alot.This would be great if used in a multiple matt setup to create a heat gradient for reptiles in cooler rooms. You would only need one thermostat probe (on the hottest matt), then set each of the others to the desired temp across the bottom or back of your enclosure. It's pretty much Identical to the Flukers, but with a built in rheostat.

Reptile heat pad good value
Work for us

Good value, requires a mod around kids.....not a safety issue though.
This was 12 bucks delivered(Thank you Mr. Bezo's) in a day so if it works, it's a win, right? It works fine, I have it laying sideways under a acrylic 16x8" enclosure housing Matilda(she's in the corner looking out) the baby Eastern Box turtle. This allows her to move to warmer parts or off to cooler areas away from the heated section.I use a laser tool to measure temps.The temp control works, but again this was 12 bucks delivered and in typical fashion per the country of origin, the assembly is a bit loose and easy for the dial to spin. I used a piece of Scotch tape 2" long over the dial and taped it's location to the housing so it doesn't move if the cord is jostled. I also added a magic-marker "Reference line" so I would know where 80F was.It's maintains perfectly, rising and falling mere tenths of a degree from the setting.Very happy and it does what I wanted to to do!special K

Product works, but would be better if you could tell what temperature you were setting it to.
