Are the sdi outputs carrying duplicate signals or are both outputs required for certain resolutions?

Accepted Answer

The outputs are independent and carry the identical signal.  One thing that is important to know is that the embedded audio signal is reduced by about 15db.  I recommend using an inexpensive preamp to boost the source audio.

I am failing to get an output when I connect a composite output from my camera but works with a component output. Most have composite outputs

If I'm understanding everything you are saying it sounds like you need to change the settings on the converter,.  On the side of the converter there are tiny switches for converter settings.  On the back of the converter you will find which position is for on and off.

I want to capture from a snell & wilcox magic dave dve system from the early 90’s to a black magic design hyperdeck studio mini. will this do it?

you will have to try it out, I use it to connect old RGB video cameras but the resolution is HD. This device won't do any scaling, wich could be an issue. I will recommend you to get any sort of scaler too or a converter with an integrated scaler

How to you connect the sdi outputs to a computer to convert? and what program do you use? do i need a different device to convert other than a compute

Hi AC, I would love to jump on a phone call so I could understand what your entire setup looks like so I could better advise you.  This Converter is used to simply convert a signal from older analog connections to a standardized SDI connection.  What I believe you are trying to do is either send out a signal from your computer to a screen like a projection screen or TV. If so then using an BlackMagic ultra studio monitor (for Mac) or Decklink Mini Monitor (for PC).  The other thing you might be trying to do is to connect a camera to your computer in order to live stream. If this is the case then do you want a BlackMagic ultra studio 3G recorder (Mac) or a Decklink Mini Recorder (PC).  The UltraStudio connects to the computer via thunderbolt 3 for Mac and the Decklink is installed in your PC’s cabinet in the PCIe slot.
