Excellent Concrete Repair Product
I recently purchased two 10 lb. bags of Mapei Planitop X from Amazon to resurface my concrete front porch and do general sidewalk patch work. I've used Planitop X previously, buying it in 50 pound bags from a local supplier when I had to do extensive front and back porch repairs after buying the house. Planitop X is not an inexpensive product, but as far as I am concerned it is a "get what you pay for" product. It sets up fast so you have to work it quickly, but I've found it to be of superior strength to most other quick-setting cements. it can be applied thinly or mixed to the consistency of modeling clay and shaped and applied with hand or trowel. If there is a drawback, it is that Planitop dries chalk white instead of gray, which for me was never a problem. Frankly, I like the way it looks when fully dried. Two cautions: 1) If the batch you have mixed begins to harden before you have used it all, don't add water to re-soften it. That will only weaken the final repair job. Instead, mix a fresh batch. You CAN add water to the leftover mix and trowel it into small sidewalk cracks or the like. It probably won't be a permanent fix but will likely hold up for several months or even a year. 2) After applying the Planitop, wait until it begins to dry, then use an inexpensive garden sprayer or paint brush to apply a coating of outdoor concrete sealer. Keep the coating thin and brush out any excess. Just be sure to cover all areas of the repair job. If you are doing a feather-edge covering as I did with my front porch -- doing so to fill in small pits and cracks and beautify the porch -- the application of concrete sealer will help the new Planitop coating adhere to the underlying surface. Otherwise much of it will rise as dust after fully dried and the repair will not be nearly as effective or as pretty. For deeper repairs, apply at least two coats of concrete sealer, waiting a few hours in between each application. If you are a novice at masonry as I was, don't be afraid to experiment. That's how you learn. I learned by trying different products. I found Planitop to be among the best.
