So why is this being advertised as leather when it is not? The Description should be changed.

It’s described as “faux” leather meaning “fake” leather. They are not saying it’s 100-% leather. Description is fine as is.

For those of us boycotting China because of humanitarian violations... is this made in China?

Not all things are made in China actually, there are some other countries that makes things such as South Korea, Japan... they make good things and great quality and not basing on quantity...

How do you get rid of the funny smell?

since it is faux leather- - I recommend turning bag inside-out and spraying lightly with Febreze scented fabric refresher. And then storing it with several dryer sheets inside to keep it smelling nice! Best dryer sheets: Bounce Outdoor Fresh, LoveHomePlanet Rose (I use these in my underwear drawer; rose scent is amazing!). I even leave some of the Rose sheets in my purse or jacket pockets while I’m wearing :-D

Can school books be carried

No. It costs $13 and change. Don’t expect something cheap to carry heavy items.
