I have an enfield where the previous owner unfortunately ground down the ears. Are they required for mounting? Or does it simply fit between?

As long as the ears "only" have been ground off or otherwise removed it will fit. The Bad-Ace uses the grooves cut for the rear sight leaf spring and the rear sight leaf spring retaining screw, so as long as they have not been removed or ground away you will get the full benefit of the Bad-Ace mount. Worked great for me.

I needed to replace the rear iron sights on my Model 1917 Eddystone 30-06 rifle with a scope. I bought this kit. It took me about a half hour to have my rear iron sights replaced with a picatinny rail system and my Vortex scope mounted. The fit to the dovetail in the rifle was perfect and the included screws were exactly correctly threaded. I'm very happy with this product.
