Guitar Repair Bible
Book are embalmed minds. That's why I now see Dan as a walking encyclopedia when it comes to guitar repair. There’s a wealth of experience in these pages that only comes from years of dedication to the craft. The “Guitar Player Repair Guide” has three sections: Basic, DIY and Deep. Again, Dan is so knowledgeable that the “Basic” sections are pretty much everything the average player needs to know. You’ll need to roll-up your sleeves for the DIY sections and have considerable dedication for the Deep sections. Dan has his own way of doing things and gives great detail on how-to and often why he likes a particular way. But what I really like is he points out how other people do things too. There are interviews and so many names/publications mentioned that the book is also a great resource for further study. Basically, Dan is confidant because he has mastered the craft of guitar repair. He doesn’t feel threatened by different perspectives. That’s what makes the “Guitar Player Repair Guide” the best book I’ve seen on guitar repair: It is intentionally inclusive of different approaches. If you do guitar repair for a living, then the “Guitar Player Repair Guide” is a must have. If you’re looking to just care for your guitar and want something more basic, then I suggest “Complete Guitar Care” by Blackwood. Wouldn’t hurt to get both. So glad I did.

What's under the hood?
The fact is many people play guitar and have no idea of how to maintain it other than changing the strings. As long as you have a good repair shop nearby that's usually all you need... or is it? If you're one of those people who have to know what it is you're holding, driving, playing and/or what can make it work that much better then this book is a must. It covers every square inch of both electric and accoustic guitars, giving you a thorough explanation of how to reach a fine standard of playability and beyond in a casual, easy to read style. What's more is it explains many of the problems repairmen and luthiers actively work to solve in a deceptively simple looking instrument. While it doesn't cover every after-market solution to every adjustment problem it does cover the essential tools and techniques necessary that should enable the reader to repair and/or tune any guitar. I was skeptical this book was worth the price until it arrived. Over 1 inch thick, excellent photos, clear layout and the included DVD is a treasure of information that would take you quite a while to accumulate for free off the net and even more time to organize. It's no wonder old copies sell for close to the price of a new one. After you've jumped into fine tuning you might go a step further by learning how your instrument was made. Check out Melvyn Hiscock's "Make your own electric guitar" to see common boards, steel, copper and magnets become that amazing thing we all aspire to play our best. Outstanding value.

Kindle edition- no videos.
First off... The kindle version has no embedded videos that would have been on the included DVD. It would have been nice if the Amazon write-up would have explained that. Unfortunately the kindle version was the same write up as for the paperback version, and referenced an "included DVD." for that reason I'm taking away a star. Poor, inaccurate write up. The lacking video issue not withstanding, this is an outstanding reference and includes information on all of the repairs / maintenance that a serious player needs to know. What surprised me was the wealth of information on advanced repairs that are really more suited to someone with advanced knowledge/experience and very comfortable with the techniques and tools described. This is exactly what I needed: a guide to regular set-ups and maintenance, and a basic understanding of the more advanced techniques of how guitars are repaired, including tools and techniques used by techs and luthiers. This information and knowledge is critical when deciding who to allow to fix your guitar or bass! Being able to discuss and understand the concepts will lead you to better decision making. My last complaint is in the OCR used to scan the text into an electronic format for the kindle. Poor follow-up editing on the electronic version resulted in numerous misspellings (such as exclamation marks being used for lower-case "L"s on occasion, and sentences or phrases with no spaces (whichlookslikethis). It's easy to read over and through these glitches, but honestly, you shouldn't have to. I bought the kindle version because I like the idea of saving paper and printing costs and I use my e-reader for nearly all of my books now, but knowing what I know now about the lack of a DVD and the sloppy editing, I would have chosen the print version.

The MUST HAVE book for anyone that owns a guitar!
When I got my first guitar in 1984 I also got a copy of the most recent Guitar Player magazine. Inside that magazine was a column by Dan Erlewine on guitar repair and maintenance. That column turned out to be the most valuable of all the ones in the magazine. Over the next year, reading Dan's column inspired me to want to learn more about the instrument, how to set it up, repair, maintain and even customize my cheap electric guitar. Over the years, I have built and repaired many guitars for local bands and musicians and the most valuable resources that I have in my library are the magazines with Dan's columns, books he has written and videos he has published. This book is the bible for anyone that wants to know the proper way to string a guitar, stretch strings, tweak and maintain the instrument. I bought this book again to give to my 18 year-old nephew who is interested in helping his friends maintain their instruments and to learn more about them. After just a couple of days of thumbing through it, he told me it was the best book he had ever seen on the guitar. This is the most comprehensive book you will find on this subject and I have bought and read almost all of them. Even if, like me, you own the first or second editions of this book YOU MUST have this edition as well. It has so much more information in it that you will refer back to it no matter how long you work on or play guitar. Dan works for Stewart-MacDonald Guitar Supply (stewmac.com) and publishes a newsletter called Trade Secrets, which is a wonderful appendix to this book. They also have most of the parts and tools that you need to work on guitars. If you only get one book to learn about taking care of your guitar - THIS IS THE BOOK YOU NEED!

Excellent!
The wealth of practical, hands-on knowledge of a huge variety of guitar makes, models and eras in this book is phenomenal. It's my hands-down go to for guitar repair and maintenance.

Must Read
This book really helped me in breaking the barrier of fear of tinkering with my epiphone les paul. I have since successfully refinished the top from black to red, replaced all the tone pots, caps, and wires (vintage wiring), replaced the bridge pup with a JB from seymour duncan, fixed a crack in the lacquer on the peg head, and wired in a new 3 way switch. I couldn't have done any of it without this book. Obviously youtube was a great help as well. Dan's book helps you to understand the guitar and how it works and it extremely thorough. Improvements could be made in the detail of wiring cavities such as a walkthrough rewire for some popular styles like the Les Paul, Strat, or Tele. In particular what type of wire to use where. Also more details on how to wetsand a guitar. Maybe the next volume. I wouldn't take a star away for either of these issues. The DVD is also helpful in getting the guitar back into playing condition. As I said, most importantly, this book really does a great job of taking away the fear associated with modding a guitar and it also does a great job of inspiring a passion for the guitar itself.

Very well Written and pretty exhaustive even covers some guitar build info, indespensable book!
This writer is a sage. The purpose of the book is not for guitar building, but builders will value that much information on here would help make a big difference if making a guitar. If you don't know how to intonate a guitar or remove and adjust a nut or bridge, this book is for you. If you have fret problems or need to clean and polish a guitar, this book is for you. No, polishing a guitar is NOT cleaning it and you will find out that you must clean a guitar and remove dust BEFORE using polish and why. A most awesome book, don't even think twice, get this book. A bunch of professionals recommened this to me, it was great advice. I'd recommend both the ebook AND a hard copy. He even helps with getting by without some tools and how to modify tools.

Brilliant! A must have for any DIYer and luthier
This book is the closest thing to a bible for any guitar player for repair and setup, either professional or hobbyist! Especially for the price, this is a must have!

Makes playing easier…
Dan Erlewine is the kind of guy that designs flying V’s that people that would normally never buy one want. My personal experience is that not all guitar store owners are created equal and some of them seek to limit your chances of success. They sell you solid state amps that appear to be broken down even though you asked for a tube amp and set up your guitar with string action higher than the Mount Everest. It just isn’t going to work… And we don’t all have access to technicians that support our endeavors. You need to figure things out for yourself. This book helps you do that. It will help you check and maintain your guitar. If it’s a high end guitar it will help you keep it in shape. If it’s a budget guitar with expansion opportunities, this book will help you do it. If you need a reference to show you how to make sure your neck is straight, this book is that reference guide. If you want to know how to wind your own pickups – it’s only a small gargantuan step from fixing and maintaining your guitar to building one from the ground up, right? – this book will help you do that. It’s a good reference guide with all the info you need. I’ve found that in the contents a few page numbers are off, which may be due to this being a later edition, and a few pictures have shifted from the right to the left, but hey, they have subtitles, the info is still there. No biggie and practical people won’t mind all that much, they’ll find it. It’s all there. It’s all clearly illustrated, verbally and with pictures. This is the book you want to have.
