5 Star Book
I recently ordered a large shipment of books on haute couture - and this book blew every one of the others away! Nothing compared to this massive tome...from the paper quality which is without equal, to the huge & colorful photographs (finding a small picture in this book is definitely the exception, not the norm). For example, the Chenoune book on St. Laurent (arriving at the same time as the Dior) looked small & cheap (no doubt due to its ugly black plastic cover which lacked even a book jacket, despite having twice the number of pages). And thanks to advances in printing technology & photography, it all looks so fresh and contemporary that it seems like these events were photographed just last week...not more than a half century ago. That is what made this book so surreal....instead a trip back in time - you are made to feel like the past has been brought into the present. And don't even talk about elegance - Dior was the master of that era, and he still remains without peer today. In fact, I had to pinch myself to remind me this collection pictured was in the 1960's - not the 1950's....it appears that the House of Dior has a sophistication that is truly timeless. In retrospect, about the only con I could find with this book is the sheer size. At nearly 15 inches in height, I had to overhaul a portion of one of my bookcases just to accommodate this. Maybe I should have just left this on the coffee table instead!

Exclusive look at House of Dior in color
This is a wonderful insight at one of the most splendid Haute Couture houses in Paris. Mark Shaw's photos take us inside the Haute Couture shows and gives you a glimpse of the Dior house in color, a rare occurrence from those days. The photos are excellent and the print quality amazing. I look forward to browsing this for many days to come as an inspiration and reference.

Don't let me put you off this, if you're up for any nice (overpriced) book on our Patron Saint of Beautiful, Mr Dior. Perhaps reflecting that this book covers the photographs taken for LIFE magazine by Mark Shaw over a decade, to me this seemed more like a tarted up coffee table book, magazine-style. Certainly, the pictures are lovely, the occasional insights behind the scenes are welcomed. But for me, I felt rather cheated. If you're going to call your book Dior Glamour, please don't leave us wanting there, as I certainly felt! When the cover photo was so evocative, teasing the mysteries of inspiration that Dior's beautiful pieces so often embodied, the anticlimax here was truly frustrating. Free advice from me - spend a little more & get yourself a copy of Olivier Saillard's "Dior by Christian Dior", from the superb Dior series published by Assouline. Or the whole series! It’s to die for!
