Pick a Pumpkin : Toht, Patricia, Jarvis: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Outstanding. Your kids will love it and so will you - I absolutely love this book and so do my children, I bought it for them a year ago. We all love Halloween and the kids particularly love pumpkins, so much so that we grow our own at home! When I saw this book I had to buy it and I’m so glad that I did. The story is lovely and the illustrations are incredible. Really amazing. The colours and textures are amazing. They are beautifully done and there is so much detail. Look out for the spooky twins and the crow eyeing up the doughnut! My kids ask for this at bedtime all year round not just at Halloween. I’ve just found out that there is another book ‘Pick a Pine Tree’ by both author & illustrator for Christmas which won awards so I’m definitely going to invest in that too! Review: Gorgeous illustrations! - This book is beautiful and is great for small-world inspiration. I used it for a Halloween-themed small world setup and read it to my baby before introducing pumpkins. It is a cute story and the pictures are beautiful. I know this will be on repeat throughout the Halloween season.

The book is filled with everything Halloween should be for a child
From the duo that brought us ‘Pick a Pine Tree‘ in 2017 comes ‘Pick a Pumpkin’ the perfect book for Halloween. In this rhyming hardcover book, you will meet a family at a Pumpkin farm ready to pick out their perfect pumpkins to carve into Jack-O’-Lanterns for Halloween. Once the perfect pumpkins have been found and bought it is time to take them home and carve them into scary faces, along with the help of their friends. Don’t forget that the house needs decorating too to give it that eerie feeling. When everything is done it is time to light the pumpkins and enjoy the night. I love Halloween, we buy numerous pumpkins to carve and line them up and wait for the trick or treaters to arrive. In the UK I’ve never seen a pumpkin farm but I can just imagine how amazing they must be. The book is filled with everything Halloween should be for a child, from carving the pumpkins to dressing up in scary costumes. The illustrations by Jarvis are amazing and give the book that autumnal feel with the rich orange and purple colours. From beginning to end this book is about celebrating Halloween and being together as a family. It is warm, comforting and just perfect for the upcoming Halloween season. Gorgeously atmospheric Halloween story
We enjoyed Pick a Pine Tree thoroughly from this same duo last year So a Halloween themed follow up is wonderful. Whilst admittedly in the UK pumpkin patches are not as widespread as the USA and many readers will be picking their pumpkin from a big box in the supermarket and toffee apples from the fruit & veg aisle this doesn’t detract from the magic and the wonder that this book promotes towards Halloween. The illustrations are so atmospheric and evocative of late autumn crispness with a smudgy ruddy palette of oranges, russets, blues, crimsons and mauves. Little details like Jarvis’ art supplies and Patty’s books, fallen leaves, spider webs, crows and black cats dotting the pages brings absolute joy to the book. This is such a wonderful book to get ready for Halloween with! Many thanks to Walker Books for the review copy.
