The greatest 3ds game ever!
Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion 3DS is an awesome platformer game. I just finished playing it and now my nephew is playing it every day. Jam packed with charm, wit, beautiful sprites and engaging game play. Art: It's simply a joy to look at. The art and sprites are faithful to Disney style and just beautifully done. Each Disney character (from Mickey to Cinderella, to Ariel to Aladdin to Scrooge) is fully realized and looks just like they should, if you know what mean! Design/Game Mechanics: What people don't realize is that the paint and thinner game mechanic is kinda optional. You don't have to paint and thin everything out, it's just part of the fun. Get over it people! Even if it slows you down occasionally, it allows you to appreciate the gorgeous artwork. It may be a little frustrating in the 3rd wing/world as it's rather challenging, but persevere with it as it's totally worth your time and play. The pacing is just right. Music: The music composition is world class - catchy, fitting, a modern take on some of the tunes from the original Castle of Illusion, orchestral sounding and very true to classic Disney soundtracks. Length: Forget what the reviews say, it takes a good 8 hours to finish the game and then you have the options to go and do side quests, shop, use level system too so the game length is hours longer. What's nice about this is, you're in total control of how you play the game. In addition, it has great replay value. I can't wait to go back to the Fortress and do more side quests. Ending: Completely awesome! I'm not sure people know this but there are over 20 different endings depending on the Disney characters you rescue, so basically each character you rescue has his/her own unique ending. So cool! Overall: Don't let the mixed reviews stop you from giving this game a go. Whether you're a fan of the original Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse, or you're a fan of Disney, or just a young kid looking for a great game to sink your teeth into, you will not be disappointed. Power of Illusion 3DS is a unique, delightful, charming and fun game to play. A nice alternative to all the mindless shooting games on the market. Fast shipping on Amazon, so get it! Nostalgia and a little something new!
Before beginning, I'd like to say I am writing this review as a 25 year old man. I received a 3DS for Christmas from my girlfriend's mom and downloaded the demo from the Nintendo E-shop. Like most old school Disney gamers I hoped it would be similar to Castle of Illusion. Thankfully, that is basically what I found. I instantly made the purchase and was so impressed I had to share! What first caught my attention was the music. This game's soundtrack is phenomenal! I want to compare it to Tomba! only because it's whimsical yet cartoony nature are equally infectious. It definitely gets you humming along. The paintbrush feature that is the trademark of the Epis Mickey franchise is integrated perfectly into this 2D platformer. The painting or erasing of obstacles is all done on the touch pad and it works very well. The game grades you on how well and how quickly you finish pictures, but there's no great penalty for not doing well, so even young children shouldn't have too hard of a time with it. The story is another solid aspect of this game that really keeps the supporting cast of the Disney Universe in mind while playing and replaying through each level. Each character you find, old and new, is given a room in the castle which is upgraded as you complete tasks for them. Items they need are typically scattered through past levels so the game encourages replay in that respect. What I found was that each time I went through a level for such an item I discovered a new platform or new area with a decent reward that made it worth exploring further. All in all, I love this game. I have no gripes. None. This is not a complicated game. It's rarely challenging. It is simply fun. I may not be an experienced 3DS owner, but I do know an enjoyable experience.

Decent...But could have been better
I have been playing this for the past few days and think it is a good game that could have been better, this game is absolutely beautiful in the graphics department and the music is good as well but there are a few things I don't really like about it..In starting the game there is a lengthy intro, the painting mechanic is annoying because it breaks up the games flow especially considering how often it is used to either paint something to assist you in progressing or in using paint thinner to remove something that is obstructing your path.I also don't care for the sidequests that need to be done for the various Disney characters that Mickey rescues which make you backtrack to stages you have already passed,I feel that this was a gimmicky way for the developers of this game to make it lengthier, i personally would have preferred new stages rather than what they came up with.

Fun, but requires stylus
While I'm not normally a big fan of DS/3DS games that make you use a stylus and the directional pad (I prefer sticking with one or the other instead of passing back and forth) or make you go back to previous worlds to find more things, I really enjoy this game, and it's probably my one exception in not feeling as annoyed as I could be. One thing that does is slow you down a bit, so you can't just rush through levels. I played it first as a demo that you can get for free through your DS, which is a great way to check out if you like the game play. If you enjoy Disney characters, it's fun to find and "collect" them, and you get challenges or tasks, as well, even in the little area where the collection is stored. For the price that I got it at (of course, that could change), I feel there's a lot of content and playability.
