Does it have to be attached to a tree ?

No, it doesn't have to be attached to a tree. I bought 4 of these as gifts for my two grandfathers, my dad, and my brother. My dad and one of my grandfathers hung theirs up on one of the posts on their back porch. My other grandfather hung his up on the side of his garage so he could see it out his kitchen window. They can be attached wherever you would like it to be.
