Meaty with slight to mild flavor, quality nutritious shiitake slices in a can priced well
I was searching for shiitake mushrooms and am glad that Polar's shiitake slices in a can are available on Amazon for a reasonable selling price.First, I liked the selling price the most. Compared to dried shiitake I found, Polar's canned shiitake were much more within my budget. Second, I like the quality of Polar's shiitake slices. I think the flavor kind of comes from the shiitake itself but I sensed what tasted like seafood too. Altogether I found the flavor fairly agreeable. Next, the shiitake slices themselves while I would have liked them to be larger and thicker, were whole slices and not broken up into small pieces. I think this is good because these shiitake slices have a notably meaty texture, which I liked and are what I think is widely considered to be a distinguishing feature of shiitake mushrooms. Next, shiitake mushrooms are, to my knowledge, very healthy to eat although cooked shiitake may be not quite as healthy as dried shiitake. Regardless, I think the micronutrients in Polar's shiitake slices may just be comparable to dried shiitake or even shiitake mushroom powder. Third I liked that these shiitake slices come in a can as I enjoyed them without the hassle of having to cook them first which you have to do, I think, with fresh shiitake.

Excellent taste
We buy by 24 pack case- packed well and always ready to go for Asian fare, gravies. They are expensive compared to crash, but fresh is often a hassle to get and God forbid you don’t use within a few days.Shelf life is 18 months .Highly recommend if your a DIY Foodie.

Great taste
They are great mushrooms and love the tast but very expensive for what you get. Only reason they are not 5 stars.

A healthy alternative
As one who prefers fresh mushrooms, but is not accessible within walking distance from me, I came across this product, my first time trying a shiitake mushroom, through Amazon. This product is a bit too slimy for me, but burying it in a recipe somewhere takes the edge off of the texture. This product has the same health property as other mushrooms that I eat - it is good for digestion issues

Inexpensive and easy to add to recipes
I prefer cooking with fresh mushrooms, but these have been great in a pinch, like when I made a broth and tossed these in to make a kind of mushroom soup for a quick meal. I toss them into omelets, as well. There's not a lot of flavor right out of the can, you really need to saute and season them if you want them to taste like anything. But the price is right, less than a $1 a can. I bought a few and now have 'shrooms on hand whenever a recipe calls for them. Fresh mushrooms have to be cooked almost right away, so they're not always convenient. (They do taste better though!)

Okay
They're okay for canned mushrooms. A little bit thick. The taste is a typical of a can of mushroom.

Utterly inedible: foul smelling and tasting
This review is for a batch of cans that said "BEST USED BY 07/20/2021" on top and "846 1-N" on the bottom.I see other reviewers complaining about the lead in this product. That's not what this was: lead is insidious because it has a pleasant sweet taste. This smelled and tasted so metallic that it was utterly inedible and probably unsafe. I opened a can and the smell hit me like a freight train. Tried to rinse it out, but after maybe 6 changes of water it only improved slightly, if at all. Had just a tiny taste and immediately debated running to the bathroom and forcing myself to vomit. Opened a second can and the smell was even stronger. It filled my kitchen, so I disposed of both cans immediately. Can anyone tell me who to send the remaining 4 cans to? Are there any food safety agencies left in the US.
