Real nice . . . until it caught on fire!
I never write reviews, but this time I thought I should since this is a safety issue. I just received this laptop yesterday, and it seemed to work fine for the couple of hours I got to use it. It's reasonably fast, and seems sturdy enough for the price. Because of that, I'm still leaving 3 stars, even with the defective battery issue. I've researched online, and so far haven't been able to find anyone else reporting this problem, so I'm hopeful that it's just an isolated incident related to my unit. Still, I thought it was only right to report it and let everyone else know. When I got the Chromebook, the packaging was intact and did not appear to be damaged. I charged it fully while setting it up. After it was done charging, I shut it down, put it in an AmazonBasics laptop sleeve, then inside my AmazonBasics laptop bag. Several hours later, I noticed a burning plastic smell coming from the laptop bag. Apparently, the battery was defective and caught fire, even though the laptop itself was undamaged and turned completely off at the time. The fire not only damaged the laptop beyond repair, but also burned a big hole in the laptop sleeve, and a couple of holes in my laptop bag, as well. The caustic odor coming from the laptop was unbelievable, and of course it was totally ruined by the battery, so I had no choice but to throw it, the laptop sleeve, and my laptop bag away. I did take photographs of the laptop, sleeve, and bag before disposing of them, and I'm including those in this review.I'm hopeful that Amazon will refund the cost of this laptop, but at this point I still don't know. The last representative that I spoke with via live chat told me that I would have to return the laptop to receive a full refund. I completely understand that under normal circumstances it's reasonable to ship products back before being refunded, but in this case it's a safety issue. I'm far from an expert on this, but I don't think it's even legal to ship a laptop with a caustic, exploded lithium battery via common carrier. Maybe I was stupid to throw it away, but at the time, it seemed stupid to keep a caustic, exploded battery that had caught fire and burned through the bottom of the laptop, a sleeve, and laptop bag in my home. The odor this left in my house is still noticeable, 24 hours later.I'll be buying another Chromebook, but not another one of these. So as things stand now, I'm out around $165 for a laptop that I only got to use for a couple of hours. I wouldn't necessarily say don't buy one, because this is hopefully just an isolated incident and not widespread. But, if you do buy it, I'd watch really carefully for any signs of overheating. I guess you should also check with Amazon before disposing of it, if it does catch on fire. If I can get any clarification from Amazon regarding their policy on returning laptops that have caught on fire, I'll update my review.Update 7/25/15: I'm happy to report that following a conference call with both Amazon and Haier, I received a full refund for the defective laptop, as well as a credit on my account for the damaged laptop bag and sleeve. Both companies were extremely apologetic about my experience, and I appreciate the way they resolved this issue.

Battery pack dies suddenly. Just like all the rest.
Like many others here, my Chromebook battery just suddenly died without warning. I had my original unit replaced when the recall was issued - the new one worked great, right up until it didn't. No warning, just suddenly it dies when unplugged from the AC adapter. All told the battery lasted 12-18 months or so.I did open mine up to investigate. crosh -> battery_test revealed that the battery is in decent shape (87% health or so) and had a charge, but wasn't powering the system when unplugged.. The actual "battery" is a pair of Li-Ion flat packs in a plastic tray, wired to a small charge controller board, and the whole thing is covered with a sticker. The entire construction seems sketchy: one battery has its tabs tacked directly to the controller, the other is soldered via wires instead to what appears to be test points, and the board is silkscreened "EDUBOOK-L (2.6)" meaning it was probably repurposed from some other device. A multimeter shows that the cells have voltage, but nothing is measured at the points where the cable links to the mainboard, The tab-attached cell is directly under the trackpad and flexes due to inadequate support in the case: this can cause it to weaken and eventually break. My guess is that some little SMT part on the the charge controller fried due to crap engineering, maybe overly sensitive to static shock or overcharging or something. Possibly, the "fix" for the original battery fire issue was to make the controller board die first instead. It was cheap to begin with so I'm not out much, but there is definitely technical design problems with the battery.

If the battery dies, there is no way to fix it
The Haier 11 was the first Chromebook I ever purchased and I really liked it. It was affordable, fast, portable, and provided everything that I needed from a laptop for the fraction of the price. (I primarily used it for typing, watching Youtube videos, or general internet surfing.) So in terms of usefulness and practicality, I would love to give this 4 stars.HOWEVER, I can only give it 2 stars because the Haier has been discontinued with no way of fixing any problems the old one might have. I purchased mine in spring 2015 and in summer 2017 the battery ceased to hold a charge. One day it was fine, and the next POOF! The only way the chromebook would even start up was if it was plugged directly into a power source... which kind of defeats the whole purpose of having it. There is no customer service phone number or email that will work or connect you with anyone to try to find a replacement battery, and while I found plenty of chargers for the Haier online, no one is selling batteries for it.So if you have one and it works, great. I hope it continues to work. Because if it dies, then I'm sorry to say that unless you're okay being tied to an outlet, you're better off tossing it and buying a new one.

Don't expect the battery to last
Purchased 2 of these and received them in May 2015. One I had to mail back in for repairs after 6 months of use. You must pay for shipping out of pocket with insurance. For me this was $18. The work was covered by warranty, but stinks that you must pay shipping. The reason for the repairs: at roughly 5 months of ownership the battery (internal) stopped working. The battery would indicate it was low. It has a very faint beep that could be heard when turned on. As soon as the charging cable was removed it would die.At 12 months of use the second computer had the same issue as the first. We can only operate it when plugged in. The battery has failed on both units. Unfortunately the second unit failed 2 weeks after the 12 month warranty expired. Very disappointing.Unfortunately the battery is internal to the computer and not something you can just replace like in a standard lap top.

Excelente
