Use a clean pastry brush and/or a damp towel. All will wipe off. If there is any left around the edges, you can wash that. Just don't submerge.

Does this make a thick Belgian waffle or a thin 'Eggo' waffle?

While I realize this question was posted a few years ago (and the fact that yes, the squares or holes in the iron are deep), you should use a recipe that has yeast in the batter for an excellent rise and restaurant type flavor. I never knew that and could never figure out why my waffles used to always be flimsy and lacking in flavor. I always use this type and let the batter rise in the refrigerator overnight. It's very convenient to only have to take it out in the morning and bake. How to make the waffles crisp ?

Saw a recipe that used 1/4 c cornstarch and 3/4 c all purpose flour to make crispy waffles (and buttermilk). Haven't tried it myself. Blog called Baking Mischief. The recipe was for a small batch so you'll probably want to double it.

How do you know when it is done? Is there a timer or light that says the waffle is done?

There is no timer. There is a green light when the iron is to temp. You just need to keep checking the waffle by lifting lid slightly to see if sticking (not done). I must admit, I made probably a box worth of batches, with 3 different brands of mix and they NEVER turned out like the picture. Never could get them to brown. = ( good luck to you!
