The Odyssey, Homer's great epic describes the many adventures of Odysseus, Greek warrior, as he strives over many years to return to his home island of Ithaca after the Trojan War. His colourful adventures, his endurance, his love for his wife and son have the same power to move and inspire readers today as they did in Archaic Greece, 2800 years ago. This poem has been translated many times over the years, but Chapman's sinewy, gorgeous rendering (1616) stands in a class of its own. Chapman believed himself inspired by the spirit of Homer himself, and matches the breadth and power of the original with a complex and stunning idiom of his own. John Keats expressed his admiration for the resulting work in the famous sonnet, 'On first looking into Chapman's Homer': 'Much have I travelled in the realms of gold...' Review: Great buy before watching movie - Brand new book just as described. Great price Review: Must have - This is a classic so I had to buy it. Great addition to any library.

TRANSLATED FROM ORIGINAL VERSE
All in verse. For a younger reader, I might recommend a paraphrased PROSE version, easier to understand.

The translation for this particular edition is good, and the introduction is better than some others ...
This is a classic and perhaps one of the most enduring and iconic adventure stories of all time. A king, returning home from a long war, fighting his way through monsters, treachery, trickery, and nature, to be with his wife and son again, and then arriving to find his kingdom under attack by suitors, out to wed his assumed widow. This is one of the origins of the Hero archetype, and the embodiment of complete man in Western culture. It arguably contains a complete portrait of the male psyche, and the father-figure, when fathers were still valued and nigh worshiped. The story should be taught in Middle and High school as standard classic fare. The translation for this particular edition is good, and the introduction is better than some others I have seen for this tome.

What stupid questions for the Odyssey
What stupid questions for the Odyssey! "Is there violence?" etc. "How is the story narrated?" Kind of a third person -- first person mix. After all Homer tells the story, but most of the time he turns the narrative over to the hero Odysseus.

I wanted to check out the part where Odysseus meets ...
I wanted to check out the part where Odysseus meets up with the Cyclops, in Lastrogonia. Some say that's modern day Sardinia. After reading a bit, I found it slow going. Impatiently I flipped to somewhere further on and began reading. I had hit the very page that I was seeking!
