Best-in-Class Pill Splitter
There are two mechanisms for pill splitters: the guillotine, which has a single blade that you press against a flat surface, and the vice, which has two blades that you press against each other. The vice mechanism is far superior. The guillotine mechanism is the default in cheap, plastic pill splitters. It causes small tablets to fragment and leaves a lot of powder residue from tablets that tend to crumble. The vice mechanism, on the other hand, creates clean, precise cuts, so that when you put the two parts of a tablet that was split in half together, you often can't tell that the tablet had been cut at all. There are no fragments that fall off when a tablet is split, but, on rare occasions, there can be an extremely small amount of powdery residue. The Equadose Pill Splitter is the best-in-class pill splitter. It's the only one that I'd even think about using on small tablets. It's sturdily made and very satisfying to use. It's a buy-it-for-life item, which makes it worth the money many times over. Please don't waste money on plastic pill splitters. If you need to cut small (or large) pills in half, the Equadose Pill Splitter is by far the best solution.Other customers have written about having difficulty aligning a pill for an equal split. If you have a tablet with an indentation in the middle to help you to see where to split it, you just need to align that indentation with one of the blades, which is easy. The important part is to make sure that the tablet's edges are vertically aligned. That is, when the tablet is within the blades, you don't want the tablet to be tilted, but perfectly straight horizontally. I think that this is what customers struggle with, but it's not terribly difficult. It just takes some practice to develop the right technique and gain confidence, at which point you can split pills quickly, without frustration.I wish that someone would create a video that compares splitting the same type of small, round pill using both a guillotine and vice splitter. There is a night-and-day difference. I would never buy a plastic pill splitter again. If you need to split pills, the Equadose Pill Splitter is the best pill splitter on the market. I daresay that it's even fun to use.

It Works!!!!
I have been giving my cat blood pressure medication for a few years. They are the smallest pills I have ever seen and they need to be split in 1/4 's !!! I have tried probably 20+ pill splitters - each would work for maybe a few times then same old result - crushed pills worthless to me! Often I would only get one usable quarter per pill. So yes, this is a bit expensive but the money it has saved me in having to refill his medication over and over has more than paid for itself. It DOES take some time to get the positioning right - because the pill is so small. It can be a bit tedious at first but after a while I know exactly how to do it. Again this is worth the effort in the long run!Update: I have now been using this splitter since November - 6 months and it is still as great as it was when I got it. I have saved a lot of money as don't ruin pills anymore. I have the smallest pills I have ever seen with NO scoring to split. They are expensive and I was averaging maybe 2 doses out of 4 per pill. Quite a difference. I have been splitting this pill for almost 5 years and gone through every pill splitter created and this is the ONLY ONE that has worked. I have seen so many complaints about it's difficulty in using or showing crushed pills and I will say there is a learning curve. Meaning you do have to position it correctly to get equal quarters so yes, in the first few uses I did average only 2 pieces per 4. However, not once did the pill crush. After I learned exactly how to place it and use it, no issues - ever! So I guess the bottom line is how much is it worth your time and money to take the time you need to practice with it when ultimately you are rewarded with a pill splitter you will use long term and save money! I have pictured a cut pill. This is what I get each and every time I use it. The pill actually looks larger in the photo and I forgot to take a photo before splitting the last pill in this bottle but in comparison it is half the size of an Advil tablet, or less than half the size. It's tiny!!Update: It is 2025 - 7 years since I wrote this review. I have over the years had to split pills for 5 cats as they aged and a Golden Retriever. Over the years sadly 4 cats have passed away as did the golden. All lived long happy lives. However, my husband and I have also aged and now we are splitting pills for our selves and our 1 remaining cat. So there has never been a long time between uses in our house! Just want to say it is still as sharp as ever, never crushes, always perfect cut. Some pills easier than others but most are tiny. I must admit it did take some time for me to learn how to eyeball the perfect position and adjust between the blades which may not be an easy task for arthritic or unstable hands (which I don't have yet fortunately) but otherwise it's still as sharp and precise as ever.

It cuts a quite hard pill, and quite cleanly.
I have a pill I take that is Extended Release, so it is hard and it is not scored. I wasn't sure it would do the job without crumbling the pill or not doing a clean job. I've only used it now 3 times, but it works very well. I carefully examined ALL of the pill cutters I could locate, and it was very evident that none of the others were going to work because of the nature of the 'cutter'.... in some cases a razor blade or similar, and the hard pill. I don't usually leave 'reviews' but I felt this was worth the extra effort. It is NOT made in China, which was a huge plus. It is American made by actual people with a purpose. It was quite obviously the best option so i bought it. It's excellent. The jaws are just right to cut a hard pill cleanly, with no score. I can tell some thought went into this. For the pill I'm cutting, it requires a bit of attention to properly 'center' the pill. When you get it where its right, SNAP... it cuts. Really excellent and sturdy. Will last very well. It COULD be used as a container, but I might not trust it not to open involuntarily. It definitely is enticing to use as a pill box. Good job building this. I would buy one again in a heartbeat. I'm impressed. It IS more expensive than some others. I have learned in this life, if you go on the cheap....you will get the cheap. I spent the extra here and it was a good move. I might have to buy another in case I wear this one out or someone else needs one. (please don't quite building them) Lyle
