I've used them in other hardwoods so with success. YMMV. **Q: What is the length of this insert? I want to mount it on a piece of 1/2" starboard. I am not sure if it will be too long. Please help.** A: The steel ones I have are .495. For outdoor or marine use, use brass. Either way, excess length can be sanded or filed down if you need a little smaller. Be sure to try one in piece of scrap first to get the hole the right size. They are handy when you need to screw a bolt into a piece of wood. I use them where a carriage bolt going through the wood will not work. I also like the version that you use an Allen wrench to screw them in.
