It does come with a small amount of string to get you started.

what is the difference between this and the one piece shaft?

You can add other accessories to the one piece shaft like an edger.Make sure you get an EGO Trimmer with the autoload and bump features unless you wish to expand your vocabulary of profanity. I had the older model, which was as much fun as a root canal and watching CNN at the same time.

Does this allow other attachments?

Hi there, good question! This is a string trimmer only and is not part of the multi-head system. You would need the PH1400 for the attachments. Thank you for your question.

Can you use a 5a battery on this or just the 2.5a battery?

I have not seen anything in the owners manual addressing any other interchangeable batteries. I don't even know if EGO makes a 5v battery, and if they do, that it would fit this trimmer. From my use thus far, I have had no problem with the capability of the 2.4v battery. Highly recommend contacting the manufacturer.
