Stainable Wood Filler

Minwax Stainable Wood Filler is an absolute game-changer for anyone doing woodwork, refinishing furniture, or fixing damaged trim. I’ve used it on everything from nail holes and gouges to deeper cracks in hardwood—and it blends in beautifully. When i bought this, the bigger size was only a few dollars more for twice the size. A no trainer to get the bigger one. This is great for the home owner that needs to fill in screw holes, etc. Granted, you will need to put dye to match.

Does what it’s supposed to. Staining isn’t as great though.

We've been restoring an old house with cedar plank siding. This product is perfect for filling all sizes of gaps and critter holes.

This has a screw lid and a tip to cut off, but if you use a bit, it won't dispense easily after a week and is unussable after two weeks. Even jamming a paper clip into opening doesn't work. Comes out showing sticky paste on it but it's too viscous to make i tout the nozzle. This is even with putting lid on very tight. So, only use this if planning on going through it all in a day or two. I had the same problem with the larger 8oz size and won't make that mistake again since I wasted 7.5 oz of it. As for the filler, it's great for filling but is really porous so drinks in lots of stain to be darker than the surrounding wood. I put a very light coat of shellac (25/75 shellac/alcohol, maybe 0.25 lb cut) over the porous filler and then the stain came out just right. So filler is very stainable and stains darker than intended, and it's useless if storing over a week, just throw it away and only buy what you need. Bright side is that it does fill and is stainable at least once, so I give it 3 stars for that.

I had some rot on the side of my house behind the siding that I needed to patch up. I removed all the rot, then sealed what was left with J-B Weld 40001 Wood Restore Liquid Hardener, which worked great. But the area of rot was deep enough that I felt like I needed to fill it. Initially I tried using Bondo Wood Filler. I was lured by they quick (too quick actually) dry times. Really the only good things about the Bondo were that it worked and it dried very quickly. But it was super hard to use, as you have to apply it within about 3 minutes. It also smelled gross and I couldn't get all of it out of the can due to the overhanging lip. It was also expensive. After one can I gave up and looked for something better. Then based on reviews I tried the Minwax filler. It's a great product. It goes on easy, sands well, and appears to be very water resistant after drying. The only downsides are 1) you need to wait about half a day between each 1/2" layer, and 2) you really have to get it off your tools fast. I accidentally left some on my putty knives overnight and now even having soaked them in water for 36 hrs it won't come off!

I've been using for decades. No other product compares. It has a consistency that seems "crumbly" not smooth like peanut butter. Don't be discouraged, this is how wood filler is supposed to be. Push it deep into the hole/crack/gouge/defect etc. so that it can come in full contact with all the wood you're filling so it will form and stick onto the wood. I frequently use my finger on deep hole to make sure it comes in full contact. Then I apply some more filler with a flexible blade puddy knife slightly higher than the surface. This way you'll be able to sand flush down to the surface of the wood. Sand gently letting the sandpaper do the work, pressing harder won't be any faster but most likely remove too much material and you'll end up with a dimple below the surface. Run your hand over the area as you are sanding, you'll feel when it is flush and smooth. You may get some crumbs when applying this is normal. I aways wipe those off and use a fresh batch for the next fill unless it is small like nail holes. In time you will get the hang of using the right amount to do the job. To do this I only scoop out the amount I'm going to use on the corner of my putty knife, not across the blade. this way you can look at the hole and match how much you'll need. I'm not affilated with Minwax, this is just my experience of many many years doing jobs around the house big and small from filling countersunk screw holses on outdoor furniture to replacing damage and holes on house siding.

The product is partially dried up in the tube and is very hard to work with.

Excellent product! Works flawlessly. Dries quickly and sands smoothly. Once sanded properly and either stained or finished, it doesn’t show.
