Not the ghost story I hoped for...
This story captivated me from the first time I heard about it. But honestly, the book left a lot to be desired and had me scratching my head. I have seen 2 programs about this story with the family members themselves being interviewed, and between them and this book, there are many inconsistencies. In my opinion, I feel the story is greatly embellished. I myself grew up in a haunted house, and the experience was so traumatic that it is embedded in me, and my story is always the same, whereas this one changes. Based upon my experience, there is no need to embellish or falsify anything to make the story more horrifying. Just having a legitimate paranormal experience in itself is unsettling. The Warrens make only a brief appearance in the book, and I found it slow moving. But after noticing how the story is different than every time I see something about it makes it much less believable, and the book is much different than any program I have seen featuring the family talking about what happened.

Eh...I was rooting for the Demons on this one.
First off, I am a fan of Ed and Lorraine Warren and the supernatural. I do believe they have probably encountered and fought some horrible spirits in their lifetime, but the only evil in the Snedekers family house hold was the horrid parent's!The mother and father were so willfully ignorant through the whole story that on no level could I have any sympathy for them. None. Absolutely zero. Not to mention that both parent's were borderline mentally/verbally abusive to the children involved. I suspect Stephen Snedeker snapped as a result of this more than anything else going on.I also think that people need to realize that the Snedekers story (especially when told by the mother) has many small inconsistencies and it seems to change depending on who she is telling the story too. This can be noticed by anyone who spends a little time watching documentaries and reading interviews on the family. Personally, I think it was a hoax set up by the parent's to ultimately profit from a time period when the whole 'haunted house' thing was popular thanks to the Amityville House story.So...was the book scary? Yes it was. It was a scary reminder that people like Mr and Mrs. Snedeker exist in the world.

Spooky Reading!
I love reading the case files of Ed & Lorraine Warren! The first one I read was "The Demonologist", which I had years ago when I was in school. I was fascinated with the tales in there and it was where I was first introduced to "Annabelle."These new editions are much better than the versions I had in the past, with cleaner print, easier on the eyes. Several have photos that are much more clear than some of the previous editions.I am so glad these books are back in print, and in a pleasant, matching collection. Be sure to get all of them, and be ready for many chilling nights reading the spooky stories that will give you lots of restless sleep. :)

Good core story, but needs a better "ghost" writer
This is supposed to be a documented case of Ed and Lorraine Warren. It is in part very reminiscent of the film a Haunting in Connecticut. The detail is good, and the pace steady, but it reads more like a badly transcribed court case. It is still a scarey tale, so I can give it that much. I don't know if it is aimed at a particular audience, or it just aims to be "moral" in the right parts of the story. Not that would be a bad thing, you just have to know your audience. However, personally I would have expected something a little better told than the somewhat pedestrian tale. The facts are there, they are scarey, and a re-working of the core story ( not embellishment) keeping to the facts would make these cases very readable.

Waste of time
I have a lot of issues with this book but I'll try to keep it to minimum. For the most part of it the parents don't believe their kids and treat them like crap, especially their son Stephen, though they experience strange occurences themselves. I was seriously taken back by their behaviour, these characters are extremely unlikable. Also the Warrens do practically nothing here and they appear for 5-10 pages at best. I treat this book as pure fiction, I never expected it to be believable, but I still couldn't immerse myself in the story. Too slow. Too much dramatizing. Brainless characters. Weak resolution. I will not buy another book of this series for sure.

Disappointing
To be honest, this is my least favorite out of the book series so far. Roughly two-thirds of the book is the parents denying what is happening in the house and blaming their son for "scaring the other kids". I understand it's hard to process what's going on, but there's denying what's happening and then there's knowing something's wrong but going about it in such an awful way that it makes the situation worse. I couldn't really stay invested in the story just for that alone. Also, word of warning that the last third of the book does get very graphic in the attacks. Just proceed with caution.

No matter what, don’t leave your haunted house!
The book is well written, but hardly believable. A family moves into a house, turns out it’s haunted, they see scary things, etc. All well and good. Then, things move from scary to members of the family getting raped, sodomized, and generally molested on a regular basis by unseen, yet demonic attackers. Now, most of us would rather move into a tent under a freeway overpass than put up with this kind of treatment, but not these folks. They happily endure all this abuse, just so long as they can stay in their house! Yeah, right. This story has been told numerous times on TV shows and movies, and with each telling it grows more horrific, violent and ....unbelievable. The next telling will probably include aliens, stargates, and who knows what else. Spend your money elsewhere.

Interesting
This is so not my regular genre, but a friend recommended the book, so I thought I’d give it a go...While I found it interesting, what I also find interesting is only religious people seem to bothered by “demons” or possessions... just my thoughts..Although the book certainly kept me interested, I really wish we could’ve found out more about how poor Stephen ended up... his family treated him terribly, and I want to know if his personality changed at all once he left the house.... would love to know more about his fate...

Author has admitted the book is fiction.
Wish I knew before buying this that the author has now said it is fiction and was told to make stuff up, I've studied hundreds of cases so as I was reading this book things didn't seem to add up, wasn't a polterguist, wasn't a demon, necrophilia that lead to an evil presence in the house, nothing added up and the end didn't make much sense, I suggest searching what the author said about the case before reading, the son storey would be helpful to clear up a few things. My advice read a book written by the actual investigators, like this house is haunted about the Enfield hunting.

Surprisingly gripping
I wasn't expecting very much from this book, having seen the Warren's interviewed a few times I'd always found their apparent determination to see the demonic in everything rather histrionic. However, the book itself was well written and gripping - a real page turner. The matter of fact style and unapologetic presentation of the facts of the case were impressive, as was the almost back seat account of the Warren's involvement.I had expected them to be presented as the shining stars of the narrative, but their presence and interventions were recorded naturally, with no pomp and ceremony.I've given the book four stars rather than five, as I would have liked to have known a bit more about the history of the house and its rather mysterious landlord.

Wow! Good read.
Wow what a scary read this is! Could not put it down. Based on a true story and highlights one of the many cases conducted by Ed and Lorraine Warren. Definately recommend if you are not easily scared.

Great for entertainment.
I am not totally sure about this one. It makes a very good entertainment read, but as for "based on real events"...To me it was a bit too gruesome near the end. However, the story has many elements common with other reports. We will probably never know what is authentic and what is written to make us hurriedly turn pages at night. It is well written.
