Yes, it’s less heavy because double boilers need to be less heavy
Works perfectly for its intended purpose: adding double boiler capacity to the 3 or 4 quart All-Clad sauce pan that you already own. It’s responsive, fairly easy to clean, and should last forever. There are a lot of reviews here from disappointed purchasers who feel that All-Clad has compromised their standards with this double boiler. A few thoughts... While this pan insert is extremely well-made from heavy-duty stainless, it’s much lighter than other All-Clad pans that are designed to be placed directly on the stove BECAUSE IT NEEDS TO BE. A double boiler insert has to be responsive to gentle steam heat, hence the single wall that is less thick than D3 or D5 or Copper Core. It’s a feature not a defect. The double boiler insert is made from non-magnetic stainless steel, i.e., can’t be used directly on induction burners, and is more resistant to oxidation than 18/10 stainless which works with induction. It isn’t designed EVER to be used as a single pan, but only to be inserted in other All-Clad pans. So again, this is a feature not a defect. The stainless handle is shorter than the handles on the premium All-Clad pan lines, which makes it easier to manage the two pans. Another feature that isn’t a defect. The pressed-out lip that allows the double boiler to sit inside a pan is shaped such that it is fairly easy to clean. Hard to describe, but the lip is more open on the top and that makes it easier to clean. When taking into account the specific requirements of a double boiler insert compared to a pan meant to go directly on the stove, the design, material and build quality of this insert equals that of the premium All-Clad pan lines. It is beautifully crafted from materials that will last forever. Yes, it is produced in China rather than in the States. Honestly, in a time where inflation is making it hard for working families to manage costs, All-Clad may deserve recognition for working to keep costs down on an item that would have cost more to produce in the U.S., even while they continue to produce their core three and five ply cookware lines here. Finally, for the folks who are disappointed that this double boiler insert doesn’t work well as a stand-alone 3 quart sauce pan….maybe you should have read the product description before ordering it rather than dinging it in your rating because of your own user error?

IT'S ALL-CLAD. 'NUFF SAID?
I have wanted a double-boiler for some time. Something to melt chocolate or keep oatmeal warm. I happen to see this All-Clad double boiler insert, used by like new. The packaging was bunged up and and pot could have been a little cleaner. I keep my tri-clad cookware as pristine as I can. This involves Barkeepers Friend and White Vinegar. So the cleanliness would have been okay for most people. And hey, it is used. I have two All-Clad skillets and now this All-Clad double boiler. For my level of proficiency, I cannot justify buying the entire line. Everything else tri-clad in my kitchen is Tramontina, which is 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of All-Clad. It is as good? No it isn't. But it is plenty good enough for me. Frankly, I think the Tramontina stainless cookware is a little prettier than the All-Clad. But this a is review for the All-Clad double boiler. Like the rest of the line, it's as strong as a tank. I'm 73-years-old, and this pot is going to outlast me by a century. Like all stainless steel cookware, depending on what your are cooking, it can make you work to keep is pristine. (Tip: use a spray like Pam, before you cook anything.) It's heavy, so you might get "skillet elbow" from pouring, but that's the deal. Tri-clad stainless steel, carbon steel and cast iron are heavy. But the all cook very well. All three can put a crust on a steak or a hamburger. I own all three, so sometimes my biggest problem is deciding which type of skillet to use. FYI: my pots are all stainless. So, the All-Clad double boiler is a well-made functional piece of cookware. It fits perfectly into my Tramontina 3 quart sauce pan. How easy is that? It's a little more money, but I think that $69 is a fair price for something in the All-Clad line. Buy it if you can find it!

Truly All-Clad
This is a great addition to my All-Clad pots and pans. Once you hold this double boiler you will see the quality that goes into all their products. As a comparison it’s identical to the size of their steamer but obviously without the holes in the bottom. Easy to store and the covers from other All-Clad pans fit perfectly. Believe me, you will use it for more than just melting chocolate.

Fits the newer 4qt All-Clad pot or pan perfectly
Switching to induction so had to replace the All-Clad Ltd cookware we acquired during the late 80s and 90s. My cookware looks almost like new and heats evenly so I wanted to replace most of it with the same brand. The old cookware is different from the new cookware I'm that the pots and pans have drip free edges and thus the lids also different. One normally does need a lid for a double boiler insert but the same sauce 4qt pan fits both the steamer and double boiler inserts and one does want a tight fitting lid for the steamer insert. I wanted to give the 4 pieces (sauce pan, lid, and steamer/double boiler insert to a good friend). The double boiler insert works well for melting chocolate or other temperature-sensitive ingredients. Some induction cooktops have a setting for melting chocolate but mine doesn't. Because the insert is stainless, it cleans up easily. The new style curved lip does make drips less likely and that's a big plus.

Works like it should.
This is a great item to have. I used it tonight to melt some chocolate and butter for a chocolate pie. It worked great! I got the water hot and then put on the double boiler while I was making the cooked part of the pie filling. Once the chocolate and butter melted, I turned the heat down to 1. Once the other part was cooked and thick enough I combined them. Very slick. I used it with a 4 quart pot. I like that I can use a 3 or 4 quart pot. Very nice. The pic is with the 3 quart pan.

It is difficult to find a double boiler. Although I wish I could find one for my 2 qt. saucepan, this will work fine.

All-Clad pans are a life-time purchase. The pots and pans are made of heavy gauge stainless steel, so it distributes heat really well. I don't ever have to use it above medium heat. The handles are riveted on and the pot is heavy because it is a nice, thick stainless steel. It can be washed in the dishwasher. If you are looking for something that you never have to replace, this is the brand to buy. They are more expensive at the out-set, but you will NEVER have to replace them or worry about them warping. I can even use them in my oven.

I only use All-Clad pots and pans. Years of using thin, poorly designed pots and pans made me realize I needed an upgrade. No regrets buying and using All-Clad. Ever.

Already own the 3 and 4 quart sauce pans and needed a double boiler insert for melting chocolate, making homemade mayonnaise, and other delicate sauces.
