Flavored flying fish roe a fundamental eye-catching accompaniment of professional sushi preparations and the home connoisseurs. These bright berries are perfect for sushi and canapés garnish. Tobiko Flying Fish Roe is slightly sweet in flavor with a mild salty overtone. While Orange is the natural color of Tobiko, it has become popular to season the small Fish Roe with a variety of different flavors and add color to identify the intensity of the various varieties. Black Tobiko Flying Fish Roe gets its black color from squid ink.

Petroleum dyes and fructose
Traditional black tobiko is dyed with squid ink, a product of mother nature. This one contains manmade petroleum dyes. The list: FD&C Yellow No. 6 (legal in the US, banned in some other countries), FD&C red No. 40 (legal in the US, banned in some other countries, this red dye is linked to allergies and aggressive/impulsive behavior), FD&C Yellow No. 5 (aka tartrazine, legal in the US, banned in some other countries, considered hazardous by some American experts, caution raised for those with aspirin allergies), FD&C Blue no. 1 (see the color on the knife in the photo; most of this dye is oil based; an FDA advisory reports toxicity when included in hospital tube feeding preparations). And then there's fructose (liver toxin when regularly consumed). These eggs were hard on my pocketbook, so to save $$ I rinsed them off thoroughly and hoped for the best. For more on the impacts of food dyes considered legal in the US on human behavior, search for this 2022 paper: Potential impacts of synthetic food dyes on activity and attention in children: a review of the human and animal evidence. Copy this title and past in your search bar to see the abstract. While this paper is about children, sensitive adults should take heed.

Sweet caviar? No thanks
Roe was sweet, rather than briny. Not what I was looking for.

shipping really high - buy at Wegman's
This product tastes good, but you can buy a container of each type for $9 at Wegman's. If you get it from this place, you pay $26 (TWENTY SIX!) for shipping and handling. Why? All I found was a freezer pack! What a ripoff. When I asked about the high shipping, the response was fairly snotty. When we received the product, we found it labeled "specially selected for Wegman's." Sure enough, next time we went, there it was. In addition, two of the containers had an expiration in two weeks! All in all, the shipping costs make this a big ripoff. Get it at Wegman's.
