I had seen the familiar Bag Balm container in drug stores for years before finally buying some. I decided to purchase it after seeing an article about it in the local paper here. It spoke of its history and its superior moisturizing and protective qualities, and, though it was originally designed for use on livestock, it has become extremely popular with people. Like a lot of other folks, I sometimes suffer from dry skin. Especially in the winter time when the air is cold and dry. And when I am out on a hike and my skin is exposed to dry wintry blasts of air continually. A visit to the drug store aisle to check out skin conditioners will serve to enlighten one that they are certainly not alone. There are tons of every kind of skin conditioner one can imagine. All conditioners, or balms, seem to work well at first. They moisten and condition the skin effectively enough. However, the real test comes over time in the hopes that it will well stay that way for a while. That is where this Bag Balm (BB) goes to the head of the class over all others. If you have never seen or used BB before, you may at first be put of by its consistency, which will remind one of a thinner version of Vaseline. Although it is a little thick and gooey like Vaseline, it does not stay in that state for long once it is spread on the skin. It feels at first rather slimy, but quickly dries and forms a very effective coating on the skin. Though you can feel it on your skin for hours after application, it neither feels tacky nor sticks to your clothing. And it is nothing less than superior in its moisturizing properties. Even the driest skin will not see BB just disappear and be in need of another application in just a couple of hours like so many other lotions. Personally I apply it once a day when needed and just forget about it until the next. It is by far the best moisturizing ointment I have ever used anywhere. I have to stop a little short in recommending someone smear BB all over ones arms and legs like a lot of women do with other lotions. Especially if your going to be out and about. It can be used that way of course, but its thickness and consistency may prove to be a little much in that respect. That doesn't mean that some folks may not find its feel all that much to bear up under and use it as an overall lotion. However personally I feel better recommending it for dry patches, and other kinds of skin abrasions. For such use there is absolutely nothing better that I have ever experienced. I routinely spread some on my face when hiking and have never gotten wind burned or suffered dry skin no matter how long I am out there. In conclusion, the "medicinal" scent that other reviewers here have mentioned is barely noticeable to me, and quickly disappears after application in any event. I would have to say that Bag Balm has less fragrance to it than any other lotion that has a scent at all. Also, I am far from being put off by this products original purpose being for use on cattle and other livestock. It has been used far too long by people to be referred to strictly as a veterinary product that has made the crossover. It's my recommendation that if you suffer from relentless dry skin that you don't let its original purpose matter to you either. It is certainly not the first product that was originally created with another use in mind, that eventually was found to have a further benefit in some other area. My experience with Bag Balm is that it works so well on dry skin that it eventually puts itself out of business. That is to say, the dry patches just eventually just stop appearing and you can slack off on its use for quite some time. So unless you live in Death Valley, this 10 oz can of balm should last you a year or more. Its the very best at doing what it is supposed to do, and I highly recommend it...

I ordered two ten oz containers. I've seen this over time in various places and it's one of those TRUE American Staple Products iike Baking Soda. Again folks BIG PHARMA likes to keep this products down - they've dumbed us down with Zillions of SUB PAR product lines that Good Ol' Proctor and Gamble has bought and sometimes the big companies disassemble a GREAT small company just so it does not interfere with "their business". Keep that in Mind. This product is great. I originally found it while doing research for my Dogs dry paw pads (Yes the bottom of their feet) After applying this only 2 times his paws were SOFT and I mean baby soft. I started using it on my hands and body as well as my face - it works GREAT - I happen to like the smell where as some say it smells like Medicine. Gives the face a shining healthy radiant look without being Greasy. I know it has Lanolin which is great for skin - I know it has Petrolium which can block pours but for me every morning before walking doggie I apply it to my face and hands and his feet. I will continue to use this product it's GREAT and Simple with many uses.

I have had eczema my entire life. I have been looking for natural alternatives to treating eczema rather than topical steroids that have left me with thinned skin and even hydrocortisone left me very ill after 6 months daily use. I heard about Bag Balm from a co-worker when I was talking about how much pain it was to wash my hands so frequently for my job. She told me when she was younger she used bag balm because she use to have eczema. This product has worked so well for me, I can say my eczema is in complete control when using this product regularly. The smell of it does stink, but I believe that it is well worth it for the rash free skin. The only thing I don't like about it is that I can not wear it during the day time because if I wear short sleeves things stick to me. The best way to apply this is at night, wearing a long sleeved cotton shirt and moisturizing gloves. (I got my gloves at fred meyer for 8 bucks- they are bamboo and infused with aloe and vitamin e). Wearing the gloves at night ensures me from itching my eczema in my sleep, and leaves my nails and hands glowing=] Within 1 week my skin was healed from the scabs and rashes that eczema curses you with. This product is SO worth the price. I have spent 100's of dollars looking for something that actually works for me, even expensive products that promise to deliver for eczema. I will purchase this product for the rest of my life.

I have been using this product for a week now (I have very dry skin) and it has helped a great deal the only negative is that it does not have a great smell it has not put me off using it as it works and dissipates rapidly, I don't view it as cosmetic but more medical treatment it does it's job very well.
