NCE Flashcard Study System: NCE Test Practice Questions & Exam Review for the National Counselor Examination (Cards)

These "cards" arrive in perforated sheets that have to be torn apart. The information included on the cars is not in question/answer form. The information is more in text book form. There is a lot of information to cover for the many sections that are included.

Flashcards are awesome because a lot of the work is taken care of for you. My biggest complaint with these is that the word count is too lengthy on most cards. I would have like to see the cards further summarized. Still better than having to make your own. This is a well known company. You won’t be dissatisfied.

These cards have a wealth of information on them! Items that you may not think will be on the test are available because guess what?? They are on the test! Get the full view of how the test will be meted out. Worth the money!

Like the intro said it can be a bit overwhelming initially however I believe the cards are a good system for studying pertinent information that may be on the exam. I recommend as making your own cards can be difficult at times. Also Im dyslexic so I don't have to wonder what info is important or transcribe it wrong.

So far, I love it. Having the topics broken out by domain is really helpful to focus on weaker areas. Having been out of school for a few years now, it's also a great way to revisit topics I haven't discussed/used in a while.

The cards were not exactly as expected. They came in a paper bundle, and had to be separated before use (as they were on cardstock that was perforated around each card). It took 10 minutes or so to separate the cards, and then I was a bit disappointed that I had no place to store them. They are 3.5 x 4.5 inches, and don't fit into any standard note card boxes. They were also organized into sections, but the sections were disproportionate. There are maybe a hundred in the "Helping Relationships" section, but only 15-20 in "Human Growth and Development". The questions are all very open-ended as well as vague at times. One card asked about the principals of communication, and the answer was a detailed description of communication within a counseling relationship. The open-ended questions are a bit annoying at first, because it's very difficult to accurately answer them on your first run through the deck (making it impossible to judge correct vs. incorrect answers). However, my knowledge of these topics is improving and my competency increasing with practice. My biggest complaint though would have to be spelling and grammar. There are several cards with misprints/typos on them, some of which misconstrue the content of the question/answer. One example was a card about the concept of the 'self' in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theories, and part of the answer referenced self-consciousness, but it was misspelled as something like self-confinement. If you have good deductive reasoning and you are familiar with these ideas you should be able to get something out of the these cards without getting confused. But, it's a big pet peeve of mine, and it also makes me question the reliability of the cards (if the creators didn't have the resources to use spell/grammar check prior to printing). So, to sum it up, there are some good qualities of these cards: very thorough and thought-provoking, as well as organized. However, the essay-like answers do not necessarily prepare one for a multiple-choice test, and the spelling and grammar makes one question the reliability of the cards.

These cards aren't bad but they are far from perfect. As others have noticed the amount of information on the back of each card is often lengthy and extensive. As I am reviewing the cards I find myself breaking down the information on each card into more digestible amounts of info and each card turns into 2-5 more reasonable flash cards. In short, this study material gives you lots of info and details to study but the downside is that as designed they aren't really effective as flash cards. I view these flashcards as more akin to a portable study guide where you can just take the pages you want to focus on than true "flash" cards.
